The Maze at Sand Hollow State Park, Utah

The Maze - Sand Hollow State Park

With over 15,000 acres of sand dunes, beautiful red rock, and miles of trails to suit all types of OHVs, Sand Hollow State Park is a haven for avid off-roaders. One of the most famous trails at Sand Hollow is The Maze.

To get to The Maze trail, you can either approach from the Sand Hollow Reservoir then go through the sand dunes or alternatively, access it through the West Rim trail from the Washington Dam staging area. We staged at the OHV parking area because we were there for the SxS Adventure Rally, and this is their event headquarters.

From the OHV Staging Area, you first need to go through the tunnel.

After you get through the tunnel, you then go up through the dunes, past Top of the World.

During the 2019 SxS Adventure Rally, I jumped in with Reid from Walker Evans Racing as he traversed The Maze in his Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity Edition.  Check the video out and you’ll get a good idea of what this trail is like.

While we went through the trail in the “traditional” direction, it is open to explore either way.  And there are plenty of optional obstacles that you can challenge yourself on or bypass if you are not feeling it.

One of the optional obstacles that has received a lot of attention is called “You Gotta Be Nuts.” One of the guys in our group decided to give it a go in his Can-Am Maverick Sport RC.

There are many steep ascents and descents on this trail, so if that gives you reason to pause, take note. While some are optional, several are not.

If you haven’t ever been to Sand Hollow and you’d like to check it out, the SxS Adventure Rally is held every year in the beginning of November.  They offer guided rides for all UTVs.
