Can-Am Maverick X3’s Take on Moab’s Slickrock

Can-Am Maverick X3

By Jon Crowley

I met up in Moab Utah with a few other industry partners to do some rock crawling with our Can-Am Maverick X3’s. With incredible scenery, varied terrain and different difficulty levels spread within 10 miles of the heart of the town, Moab is such a great place to off-road.

The Can-Am Maverick X3 first hit the market in 2017 with the Maverick X3 X RS with 154HP, 72-inch stance and 20/24 inches of suspension. At first, the X3’s were seen as more of a dune and desert machine, but then aftermarket front differential lockers hit the scene and made them very capable rock crawlers.

In 2018, Can-Am bumped the horsepower to 172, and also added the RC model with a new “Smart-Lok” front differential than made this X3 a super capable rock crawler right out of the box (see CAN-AM SMART-LOK FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DEMONSTRATION and CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 X RC TURBO R REVIEW).

Over three days in Moab, we hit up Hells Revenge, Cliff Hanger and Golden Spike trails in April of 2018.

On the trail in Moab for this trip we had five different Maverick X3’s:

  1. Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC – 172HP, 72-inch
  2. Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS with billet Halo locker
  3. Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS with Halo locker
  4. Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS
  5. Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC – 120HP, 64-inch

It was great to see the different X3’s do well in Moab. With all of the stair-stepped obstacles in Utah, stretched wheelbase of the X3 is a plus for sure.  And I really like the low range gear ratio. Super low and the belt never comes close to slipping. The only thing that I didn’t like as much is the visibility.  Sitting low in the vehicle with a longer hood makes it tough sometimes when coming up and over an obstacle, but after a while you learn to adapt.

If you have never been to Moab, put it on your list and get your Maverick X3 ready because it is a bucket list off-road destination.  You can take it much easier than we did and still see some awesome terrain with great views, or you can go even more extreme to test your rock crawling skills.
