The 2017 UTV Takover Summerfest was held June 14 – 18, 2017 at the Coos Bay dunes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.  Event headquarters were at the Boxcar Hill Campground and there are many free activities. One of the most popular racing events was the Sand Outlaws UTV Short Course presented by Humboldt Motorsports.

The Sand Outlaws UTV Short Course at the 2017 UTV Takeover saw almost 30 competitors.  Two drivers set off simultaneously on the same track while driving on two separate but equal lanes. The course took the space of about two football fields and contained elevation changes, sharp corners, jumps and crossovers. After a test lap the racers were ready for action.

The race was setup as a single elimination event where the loser in each race becomes a spectator.

Racing dwindled down to a head-to-head with Woody Evans in his Can-Am Maverick X3 against Al McBeth in his Polaris RZR XP Turbo. The final was a best of three and although the racing was close, McBeth took the win after two races.

This is the best laid out short course track we have ever seen in the dunes. The track is laid out so either novice or pro were challenged and spectators have plenty of space to have a great view of all the action.  Expect the popularity of this event to increase for the 2018 UTV Takeover and possibly see separate classes for pro and amateur.
