Yamaha YXZ1000R with GYTR Torque Assist Gear Kit at Brimstone

On September 1st of 2015 Yamaha introduced its greatly anticipated first pure sport UTV, the YXZ 1000R.  While a success for the west coast riders, it was lacking the low end gearing for the east coast trail rider to overcome the various obstacles they face.

On Sept 12th 2016, The demands from the east coast Yamaha fans have been answered.

Yamaha introduces the new GYTR Torque Assist Gear Reduction Kits!! With a 30% reduction in the final drive and an additional 40% reduction in first gear, I was more than intrigued to have the opportunity to get to test drive an equipped YXZ1000R in the hills of Tennessee.

The setting:
Brimstone Recreation in Huntsville, TN during the fall Paragon event.
Conditions were less than desired, as the weather turned for the worse and the rain set in.
This was perceived to be a formidable challenge for the YXZ. (Southeast + rain slicked hills = no bueno)

Equipment:
2016 YXZ1000R with Torque Assist Gear Reduction Kit, Rekluse Clutch and 30-inch EFX  MotoClaw Tires.

My Background:
I am an east coast rock junky. I enjoy slow technical trails with large rocks and ledges. A fan of the CVT clutch system, I was skeptical of the YXZ’s capabilities to please this RZR “fan boy”.

Time to ride!! Right off the bat I liked the rekluse clutch. With no forward momentum, riding the clutch or revving the engine, simply release the clutch at idle and the engine doesn’t stall.  We embark on our three hour journey through the rain soaked trails of Brimstone.

The GYTR Torque Assist immediately impressed me. Climbing hills with ease in first gear was a breeze. Although not having a standard clutch helped quite a bit. I made the decision to purposefully stop half way up several steep climbs to see if gaining wheel speed could be achieved from a dead stop.  To my surprise the YXZ1000R now has the low end grunt to pull out of tough situations! While riding the more moderate trails, first gear wasn’t necessary. I spent most of my riding time in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I will say it was a nice change not to have to come to a stop every time I needed to switch from low to high as I do with a CVT.

My final thoughts:
Driving the YXZ1000R is a lot of fun if you like banging through gears like a formula one racer. The Torque Assist is the missing link for the YXZ1000R enthusiast that wants to ride east coast trail.. At $999 for everything you need to turn this west coast speedster into an east coast hill climber, I see it as a no brainer. I think Yamaha should offer two different models right from the factory though – one with standard gearing and another with lower gearing (GYTR Torque Assist).  Then also have the option to convert with the GYTR Torque Assist Gear Kit. It would be great to see the lower gearing offered in the YXZ1000R SS as well.

I enjoyed my ride and would consider adding the YXZ1000R with Torque Assist to my list of wants. Although, I can’t help but think how adding a turbo to this platform would increase my smiles per gallon
