The Pit Bull Tires UTV King of the Hammers race will be held
on Thursday February 11th, 2010 in Johnson Valley, CA and the
Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx is finally ready to race. The
Teryx will be driven by Reid Nordin of Kawasaki Team Green with
spotter duties falling on Jon Crowley.
This year's UTV race will be approximately 60 miles long and
includes dry lake beds, sand dunes, desert roads and extreme
rock crawling all in one race. "Although this race is shorter
than many other desert races, the combination of terrain make it
very challenging," commented Jon Crowley, owner of the #1965
Kawasaki Teryx. "This race takes its toll on a UTV, and I think
our unique build is well suited to take it on."
After competing is last year's exhibition UTV race, Crowley
raced in one Valley Off-Road Racing Association race before
embarking on a complete ground up build for this years King of
the Hammers UTV race. The frame was stripped down to the main
chassis rails that hold the engine and differentials. Then
Roggy Enterprises built the custom chassis and roll cage that
incorporate Fox's new 2.0 position sensitive shocks and Funco
long travel suspension.
The heart of the #1965 Kawasaki Teryx is a 840cc v-twin with
ported heads, big valves, billet throttle bodies and Pro Pipe
from Muzzys Performance Products. All the intricate aluminum,
wiring and finish assembly was done by Motorsports Fabrications
Services (MFS).
"As you can imagine, tires and wheels take a beating and that
is why we teamed up with DragonFire Racing and Pit Bull Tires,"
commented Crowley. The brand new Rocker XOR from Pit Bull Tires
combines strength and agility with its 8 ply radial and super
deep, soft lugs that grip the rocks. And DragonFire Racing's
Baja Crippler beadlock wheels not only look good, but have super
stout inner reinforcing and beadlock rings.
As the driver of record and winner in the UTV class at the
2009 Baja 500 and Baja 1000, Reid Nordin is very capable behind
the wheel of a Kawasaki Teryx. "Reid and I have been on several
rides together including Moab, the Rubicon and the Grand Canyon.
He is a good friend, and a consistent and methodical racer. I am
really looking forward to getting to the start line to have some
fun."
