About Kipu Ranch Adventures

While vacationing in Kauai, I convinced my family and friends to try a little off-roading adventure. We hooked up with the folks at Kipu Ranch Adventures since they had four seat Yamaha Rhinos that were perfect fit for our two families. In February 2008 when we were there, they had a fleet of sixteen Yamaha Rhinos.  Several of the Rhinos had been outfitted with a full cage and extra seat so they could carry a family of four. They also use Can-Am ATVs.

Kipu Ranch Adventures takes you on an off-road tour of a working 4,000-acre cattle ranch that is owned by the Rice family.  The ranch extends from the Huleia River to the top of the Haupu Mountains. Beautiful mountains, valleys, waterfalls, forests and lush pastures that have made it the site of many movies such as Raiders of the Lost Arc, Outbreak, Six Days & Seven Nights, Mighty Joe Young, Hook and Jurassic Park.

Tall, narrow Cook pines, planted by Capt. James Cook for replacement ship masts, lined the road.

History of the Rice Ranch

William Hyde Rice moved with his missionary family to Kauai in 1854.  Queen Liliuokalani visited Kauai in 1891, she was the honored guest of Rice and his wife, Mary. After she came ashore at Nawiliwili, a horse-drawn carriage took her to Rice’s home, “Hale Nani,” in Lihue.
