Pit Bull Tires UTV King of the Hammers $5,000 Purse Largest in History of UTV Racing

JOHNSON VALLEY, CA, OCTOBER 10, 2009: The Pit Bull Tires UTV King of the Hammers race will be held on Thursday February 11th, 2010 as part of the week long Hammerking Productions event in Johnson Valley, CA. The first place purse for this stand alone race will be $5,000. There will also be multiple contingency opportunities.

Pit Bull Tires has stepped up to the challenge and is proud to be the Title Sponsor of the UTV King of the Hammers race. “I believe that this is the next big race. You have to want to win this race, to even complete it,” said Mike Green of Pit Bull Tires. “We are very excited to be the title sponsor.” Pit Bull Tires is adding to the purse a set of their UTV tires for the first three finishers and the last place finisher.

All of last years drivers, and many of the current Griffin King of the Hammers drivers have committed to racing. The driver application will be online at www.kingofthehammers.com within the month. There is currently no cap on entries, and Hammerking Productions expects a great field of celebrities, seasoned racers, and enthusiasts that just want to come out and experience this epic adventure.

In 2009, the exhibition UTV race was held and completed within four hours. The five racers took their vehicles and tested them in the desert and in some of the most extreme rock crawling environments. This year, the course will be a little longer, a little harder, and will utilize some of the King of the Hammers rule book which includes no spectator help, only competitor help. The length of the course has not been determined at this time. There will be additional information available soon on www.KingOfTheHammers.com.

###

Hammerking Productions, Inc. created the “King of the Hammers” off-road race in 2007 (www.kingofthehammers.com). The first UTV King of the Hammers race was held in 2009 as an exhibition to see how the UTV’s did in these extreme conditions. In 2010 the Pit Bull Tires UTV King of the Hammers will grow into a full fledge race.

The 2010 Griffin King of the Hammers will be on Friday February 12th, 2010 where over 15,000 drivers and fans from around the globe will descend on the desert of Johnson Valley for over a week of off-road related activities. The 2009 running of the King of the Hammers was featured on Spike TV and in the film “Second Crusade.” In 2009, Hammerking expanded race action to include three additional regional qualifiers for the 2010 race. Can Am releases 2010 model info. No Side x Side on the list.

Can Am BRP
We were hoping that Can Am would release their new side x side as a 2010 with the rest of the updates on May 29, 2009, but there is no news about a UTV.

Now it is not unheard of to release a new product part way through a model year, so that is what we will have to hope the Can Am does.

Most are hoping that Can Am comes out with a side by side that competes with the RZR S, and nothing would make me happier.

2010 Can Am Model Press Release:
Valcourt, Quebec (5/29/2009) - BRP's 2010 Can-Am ATV line-up features the industry's first air-controlled suspension system (ACS) and a new Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) with dual-mode, speed-sensitive power assist, and next-generation Visco-Lok QE automatic front differential.
While the Can-Am ATV brand continues to strengthen its position as the enthusiast ATV line, BRP's 2010 models bring even more value through innovation to the ATV industry. Features like bringing user control to power steering through its dual-mode, speed-sensitive DPS system and a six-way adjustable air-controlled suspension system give ATV enthusiasts more control over the riding experience.
Never have the reasons for the ATV enthusiast to buy a Can-Am product been stronger than in this year's ATV line-up. Can-Am ATVs always feature the most power, sharpest handling and best design in the industry, and now, BRP brings new technologies that inject unprecedented value into ATV riding.
“Our brand is more than ever poised to give the consumer what they demand most right now: value and innovation,” said Yves Leduc, vice-president and general manager, North American Sales & Marketing Can-Am and After-Sales Operations. “In 2010, BRP brings exclusive technologies to the industry and strengthens its position as the brand that continues to innovate while delivering on its promise as the choice for the ATV enthusiast,” he added.
BRP's Can-Am products provide innovation not only through its technologies, but through its value-added packages as well. For 2010, enthusiast's favorite options into the XT™ and the new XT-P packages that include items like DPS, winch, premium tires and wheels, front and rear bumpers result in unprecedented value for the discerning customer.
In 2010, BRP once again proves to the world that the product is king," said Chris Dawson, vice-president and general manager, BRP International division. "Can Am provides greater power, better control and even more stunning looks than ever with its 2010 ATVs. It is what we believe ATV enthusiasts are looking for."

Buyer's Guides to UTV Long Travel Kits

Stock vs. Long Travel Suspension for a Polaris RZR

How to pick a Long Travel Kit for your UTV

Aftermarket suspension kits for side x side vehicles are a very popular way to increase the wheel travel and handling of UTVs. Companies like Funco and Fireball Racing have teamed up with shock manufactures like Sway-A-Way, Bilstein, Elka, King and Fox to create suspension kits that far exceed anything seen in a stock vehicle.

UTVGuide.net has the most complete information for the side x side vehicle owner that is looking to improve vehicle handling by adding a long travel suspension. Our buyer's guides not only list manufacturer contact info, but also show detailed pictures of all the different kits in one place so you can do all of your research from one page.

What is included in a Typical Long Travel Kit?

Before you go running off to buy one of these long travel kits, it is best to understand what is included so that you can make side by side comparisons.
All long travel kits include new a-arms, either a completely new axle assembly or just new axles to use with the stock CVs and either new tie rods or tie rod extensions. From there, things vary quite a bit depending on manufacturer and vehicle. For example, the Polaris RZR requires longer brake lines, but the Kawasaki Teryx does not.

A-Arms - There are a few different types of a-arms are out there. Most are made from chromoly tubing, others are boxed, and a few are made from billet aluminum or mild steel. Each material type has pros and cons. Ask questions about why a particular material and arm design was chosen.
Some kits come powder coated in a standard color. Others come unfinished or offer custom colors.

A-Arm Hardware - Inner and outer a-arm hardware is may be replaced. Many of long travel kits come with new bushings (Delron, Daystar, etc.) on the inner side of the a-arm, but some convert to heims for more adjustability. On the outer or spindle side, some kits use heims, others use uni-balls, and a few reuse the OEM ball joint. There are pluses and minuses to each type of setup and quality can vary from heim to heim and bushing to bushing.

Axles - When you extend the wheels out, you are going to need longer axles. There are two approaches to this. The cheaper route is to reuse the stock CVs and just replace the axles. The more expensive route is new axles and CVs. Swapping axles and reusing the stock CVs takes more time, so if you are paying for the kit to be installed, factor this in.

Shocks - All of the long travel kits and most of the mid-travel kits include new coilover or air shocks.

Tie Rods - Some kits come with tie rod extenders. A few come with complete new tie rods.

Shock Towers - A few of the kits have optional shock towers that move the upper shock mount location up and out. This allows for a longer shock and more wheel travel.

Frame Gussets - Long travel kits put more stress on the factory a-arm and shock mounting locations. Several manufacturers are now offering bolt-on or weld-on gussets to help beef up the stock frame in critical areas.

Hatfield-McCoy opens more trails to UTVs

Source: http://sundaygazettemail.com/News/200903060603

March 7, 2009
Hatfield-McCoy opens more trails to UTVs

The growing popularity of Utility Terrain Vehicles means more trails are being opened to the two-seat off-road cousin of the ATV on the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The growing popularity of Utility Terrain Vehicles means more trails are being opened to the two-seat off-road cousin of the ATV on the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System.
UTVs have always been allowed on all green, or easiest-to-ride, trails in the Hatfield-McCoy system, but have been banned from trails rated intermediate (blue) and most difficult (black).
This week, Hatfield-McCoy Trail System officials announced that all intermediate trails, totaling about 175 miles, are now open to UTV use, and that advanced-level black-marked trails at the Little Coal River System 20 miles south of Charleston would soon be open to UTVs.
By having all green and blue trails open to the wider, two-passenger vehicles, UTV riders will have access to about 80 percent of the Hatfield-McCoy system's 500 miles.
UTVs currently lack the federal safety laws mandated for the manufacture and sale of ATVs. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System has created its own list of regulations, which mirror those for ATVs and take into account expected labeling and rider limitations.
"We feel we are leading the way for the rules and regulations for the UTV side-by-side machines," said John Fekete, the trail system's deputy director.
Fekete said trail system employees have been using UTVs for maintenance and enforcement work for the past five years without incident. "We've field-tested them," he said.
The decision to open more difficult trails to UTV riders followed "several months of watching how the riders were handling the [green] trails," Fekete said.
UTVs are slightly wider than ATVs, with a passenger and driver sitting side-by-side under a roll cage. The vehicle is equipped with a steering wheel and seat belts.
"They are very user-friendly ... and are more comfortable," said Fekete, adding that UTVs are becoming increasingly popular for off-roading. "I really believe that these [UTVs] are going to take over the market."

Possible ATV/UTV ban on city streets in Pocatello, Idaho

Jan 9, 2009

POCATELLO - As the Gate City tightens its belt for the upcoming year, it's also dealing with a proposed ordinance that's getting a lot of people riled up. It's over a possible ban on ATV's and other off-road vehicles. The draft comes as a result of an amendment to a state ordinance, that gives city governments the power to regulate if ATV's are allowed on city streets.

The Pocatello City Council is proposing to make it illegal for ATV, UTV, and motorbikes to be driven on all public streets and highways, including public and private property open to the public. And some worry, that could affect local ATV dealerships. The draft does have allowances for ATV's to be used in the city for snow removal and agricultural work.

Mayor Chase told Eyewitness News there were several people in support of the ban, but none of them showed up to the council meeting. This public hearing on the possible ATV ban has been continued. The topic will be picked up next week at a special meeting.

UTVGuide.net celebrates its first year on the net with the year in review

UTVGuide.net
As 2008 comes to a close, UTVGuide.net celebrates a successful first year on the internet. Created in December 2007 as an off-shoot from DuneGuide.com, UTVGuide.net is now visited by nearly 50,000 visitors each month. “The UTV market segment is a very exciting place to be,” remarked Jon Crowley, owner of UTVGuide.net. “The sport UTV market took off five years ago with the introduction of the Yamaha Rhino, and new models and manufacturers are hitting dealer showrooms at an incredible pace.”

Just a few of the exciting things that happened in the UTV market during the last year include: Kawasaki’s introduction of the 2008 Teryx and 2009 Teryx Sport; Polaris was first to the market with factory long travel on their RZR S; and Arctic Cat set the bar high for power hungry sport users with their new Prowler 1000 XTZ.

UTVGuide.net was thrilled to be invited to the 2009 Arctic Cat 1000 XTZ press intro and the 2009 Kawasaki Teryx Sport press intro during 2008, and we look forward to participating in many more UTV model intros next year.

Highlights for the year at UTVGuide.net include being chosen as a test driver for Side x Side Action Magazine’s 1st UTV Shootout, and their Kawasaki Battle of the Builders. And few incredible UTV trips rounded out 2008. In May, we traveled south of the border to Baja with Off-Road Warehouse and Side x Side Action Magazine for the 1st Annual Mexico UTV run. And in October we made a trip to the Grand Canyon that won’t soon be forgotten with Side x Side Outfitterz.

Our UTV stable includes two project vehicles, a 2008 Polaris RZR and a 2008 Kawasaki Teryx. Both UTVs have been extensively featured in Side x Side Action Magazine and we are blessed to work with so many great companies that helped us on the projects. Over the next month, the number of UTVs in our stable will more than double with a new Kawasaki Teryx that we are building up for the King of the Hammers UTV Competition, a long term demo of a Polaris RZR S, and a demo unit of the new 2009 Polaris Ranger HD.

2008 has been a great year for us. As we look forward to the next year, we’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope that everyone has a successful 2009.
