Baja 1000 from the driver's seat of a DragonFire Racing Kawasaki Teryx

By Reid Nordin, Kawasaki Team Green

I’m finally home from the 27th annual Baja 1000 after nearly 10 days south of the border and boy does it feel good to be home. This year’s event would be one of the toughest Baja 1000’s ever. When the elite Trophy Truck class can only muster a 46MPH average you know it must have been tough. Just like any trip south of the border I have endless stories to tell from the trip down and back to the pre run let alone what happened during the race.

Let me start off by saying thank you to those who made this such a memorable trip this year. The entire Dragonfire crew of Todd, Jack, Seth and Darren put together and outstanding program, Todd and Ross at Fox for a great suspension setting. Everyone at ITP for the bullet proof wheels and tires, Mike Lasher for being a great pre run partner and our communications expert and to my teammates, Hans Waage, Todd Ramano, and the Baja Legend, Larry Roeseler. Thank you all for making it happen!

The pre race activities and prep were running along smoothly when we developed an issue with the ITP car during our final tuning session. The Nessy 1 was already tuned and ready to go but now we needed to change our attention to fixing the issues with second car before we did any more prep or pre running. Luckily the team was fully prepared and we installed a new bullet in the 1801 ITP car and set off to tune the car a final time. Just when we thought the tuning was finished a second problem occurred. This meant another rebuild and another day lost to prep.

The ITP car was finally up and running and we ran the start section in the 1803 car as a final shake down. We decided that night to do a visual on the valves just to make sure and we found the problem that caused the failure on the ITP car before it ruined our day. The valve spring retainer developed a crack and would have failed for sure had we left it alone. I wasn’t too worried as we still had about 18 hours before the start of the race.

Darren and Seth did a great job of swapping out some engine parts and we were back up and running the first thing the next morning. During the final assembly we didn’t fully tighten an oil line and when we ran the car down the highway she sprung a leak. Good news and bad. Good news, we found it before the race and bad news because staging was a mere 30 minutes away. How much more could go wrong before the race? That thought entered my mind for sure but I stayed calm and knew we could make it all work in the end. As it turned out we made the start with plenty of time to spare and my blood pressure and heart rate could return to normal in time to take the green flag.

To say this race was brutal would be a gross understatement. The dust was so bad at one point I was forced to make forward progress only using my GPS to guide me. It sucked to be limited on Laguna Salada to a mere 30-40 MPH but when visibility was zero that was the best I could do. I drove the first 200 miles and I passed more broken and stuck ten cars than you could imagine. Other then severe dusty conditions things seemed to be going smoothly for the Monster Energy DragonFire Teryx Nessy. Both Todd and I got stuck in a bottle neck but he really got the short end of the stick as he had to sit motionless for over 30 minutes at RM573. My bottleneck was early and only lasted 5 minutes tops although it did seem like an eternity.

Hans drove the second section flawlessly and gave the car to Todd in perfect condition. We had already decided to do an air cleaner swap and a belt change at RM395 but as it turned out we did not need to do either but we did just to make sure. Todd finished the Mike’s section just as the sun was coming up and gave the car back to me. Lasher installed a new GoPro camera while I changed the pedal location (it's hell being short). I handed the Teryx over to my hero, Larry Roeseler, who had already finished the race in his Norman Motorsports Trophy Truck. LR had his pre runner down there and needed to get it back to Ensenada so I jumped at the opportunity to get behind the wheel. We jointly decided that I should follow him up the course in case he ran into any trouble so I followed him to Santo Thomas before he headed east back to Ojos Negros and our final pit.

LR ran a solid anchor leg with zero troubles and brought the car home for a class win and a finishing time that puts us in a great overall position. Not only did we finish well but we were faster then many classes that started before us. As it goes in Mexico, anything can happen and it is never over until you take the checkered flag. It could have been a disastrous event if we weren’t as prepared as we were. The Nessy has again proved her toughness and agility in the worst Baja could throw at her.

This could not have been possible with out the following supporting cast: DragonFire Racing, Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green, ITP Tires and Wheels, Fox Racing Shox and the entire hard working crew that put it all together.

DragonFire Racing Aligns with Roeseler and Team Green

Kawasaki Teryx - DragonFire Racing
DragonFire Racing, multi-time Baja Champion Larry Roeseler and Team Green Kawasaki will be at Rounds 5 and 6 this weekend in the Lucas Oil Offroad Series. As the Side-by-Side industry grows, it grows attention. Attention is coming from new sponsors, manufacturers, and drivers. Short course racing has brought a lot of attention to the Side By Side market, and the close racing amongst manufacturers and drivers continues to bring new and talented people into the sport. Larry Roeseler not only brings talent and positive attention to our sport but a personality that is approachable and a fan base that stretches many generations. Larry is a recognized motorcycle racer with ten overall wins in the Baja 1000, nine overalls at the Baja 500, ten I.S.D.E. Gold Medals and has been inducted into the American Motorcycle Association's Hall of Fame. Not stopping in his two-wheel winning ways, Larry took to four wheels in 1995 and has since added three more Baja 1000 overalls and also two more Baja 500s, not to mention numerous championships and class wins along the way. Larry has been a Kawasaki Team Green Rider for 18 years, and continues to be a spokesman for the company. His ability to not only improve a vehicle but to continue its development is what makes this new racing team so exciting. DragonFire Racing has spent the last six months designing this car for Larry, and has made it the most advanced race car on the track. "I am a very lucky man, being involved in so many different projects over the years, and now this with DragonFire Racing-I'm very excited," said Roeseler. "I can't wait for everyone to see this car and team at the LOORS races. It'll turn some heads, and trust me, we'll win some races." The Teryx Larry will be driving will set a standard for the Side by Side industry and will only help to grow and improve the products that we see available at the manufacturer and aftermarket accessory levels. The DragonFire Team Green Teryx has specifically designed to allow the suspension to provide over 17 inches of wheel travel but still meet the width requirement set forth in the LOORS rules. To handle the 120 horsepower developed by the DFR Teryx motor, the car will have 14-inch ITP tires on all four corners. Type 1 rear axles and CVs with inboard hubs and disc brakes were developed to accommodate the horsepower and CV angle. Developments in the steering system include new front steer spindles, custom racks, quick steer and a steering damper. All-new A-arms were designed, with 24-inch Fox shocks mounted to the lower arms both front and rear, keeping the roll center of the car as low as possible. Fox designed all-new shocks with 8-inch remote reservoirs for increased cooling capacity, as well as larger-diameter shock bodies and shock shafts to enhance the increased travel. A hanging racing billet brake pedal with a remote reservoir was developed to provide more space in the driving compartment. Race Pack created a digital dash that displays RPM, speed, water and oil temperatures and oil pressure, as well as shock temperature, allowing the driver to manage all the key functions of the vehicle. All these products and more will make it to market and be available for the weekend racer or warrior. It is products like these that will put DragonFire Racing and Kawasaki on the podium and on your car.

DRAGONFIRE RACING KAWASAKI TERYX™ WINS BIG AT BAJA 500

Irvine, Calif. – The Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx won its first ever Baja 500 in the Sportman UTV class by an outstanding margin, putting the Kawasaki Teryx in a league of its own. The RUV (Recreational Utility Vehicle) was piloted by Kawasaki’s own Team Green Manager Reid Nordin and Hans Waage in great weather conditions for the single day event. The two drivers took advantage of the Teryx’s V-Twin engine to finish hours ahead of the next finisher.
Kawasaki Under the Tent
Late Start
At the start of the race, the Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx was lined up third in the segmented start. During the mandatory safety check, the team was required to adjust the extra safety lights on the Teryx and ended up starting 10 minutes behind the next car while making the necessary adjustments. The deficit didn’t last long as Nordin piloted the RUV to the front of the class by race mile 78.
“It didn’t take long to catch up to the other cars,” said Nordin. “We were able to run a really fast pace thanks to a great chassis and an awesome motor.”
Take What Baja Throws At You
Cruising with a two hour lead over the class competitors, Nordin was just over 25 miles from the teams scheduled pit stop location when he had to pull over for repairs. By the time the chase truck was flagged down, parts fixed and back on track, the team lost almost three hours. Only one competitor passed the team in that time span. After switching drivers, Waage piloted the Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx to the lead at race mile 260 and never looked back.
“Baja is one of those places that will throw anything at you,” said Nordin. “In my many years of experience with this race, there is always a chance to break and a chance to come from behind. I think that the Baja race is the most challenging event because of that factor.”
Winning Experience
Starting his visits to Baja during the 1970s, Nordin brought decades of experience to the new team. After all those years, this was only his second time actually racing the event with his previous experience on a three-wheeler in the 1980s. Most of Nordin’s Baja experiences have been helping lead the Kawasaki off-road team to numerous victories in the late 80s and early 90s.“
I just love Baja and I do whatever I can to get down for the 500 and 1000 races,” said Nordin. “I’m glad I was able to help the Dragonfire team to their first victory.”
A Proven Winner
The Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx raced in the 2008 Baja 1000 and the team used that time as a learning experience for future races. The two companies, Dragonfire and Kawasaki, put their heads together so the next event, the Baja 500, was a complete success.
“Dragonfire Racing has worked with others before and the cooperation we’ve had with Kawasaki has developed into a great partnership,” said Todd Romano, Dragonfire Racing Owner. “We pre-ran the course for over 1000 miles (with temperatures in the lower 100s) in a Teryx that was similar to the race vehicle and we didn’t need to change the oil or air filter.”

Kawasaki Teryx finishes first in UTV Class at the 41st Baja 500

Kawasaki Teryx - DragonFire RacingEnsenada, Mexico - Reid Nordin of Team Green Kawasaki and co-driver Hans Waage crossed the finish line in first place in car #1803 at the 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Nordin/Waage were driving a Kawasaki Teryx built by DragonFire Racing and crossed the finish line with a time of 18:23:42.
"The DragonFire Racing Teryx ran great," said Reid Nordin from Team Green Kawasaki. "We had our share of flats and one problem with a rear upright, but other that that the car ran flawless. And the course was really torn up by the time we ran. I pre-ran a good portion of the course, but it didn't really help because we were about the 200th vehicle to start the race. The ruts and whoops were deep by the time we rolled though."
With four UTVs officially starting the race, only two crossed the finish line in the alotted 20-hour time limit. The only other UTV to finish was Thomas Graves in Yamaha Rhino #1804.

Round three of the five-race 2009 SCORE Desert Series and the second-oldest desert race in the world, featured 267 starters competing in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and ATVs. The 41st Tecate SCORE Baja 500 course was 432.51 miles long and started and ended in Ensenada.
Round 4 of the 2009 SCORE Desert Series will be the 14th SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 on Sept. 11-13 in Primm, Nevada.

Kawasaki Teryx Airbox Lid

Pro Armor Kawasaki Teryx Podiums at Blue Water Grand Prix

Pro Armor Kawasaki Teryx Built By Side X Side Outfitterz Podiums at Blue Water Grand Prix

Riverside, CA, (5/14/2009)- The Pro Armor Kawasaki Teryx Built by Side X Side Outfitterz finishes third this weekend at the Blue Water Grand Prix and takes the season points lead. Under extreme temperatures this past weekend in Parker, AZ and a late afternoon start time of 3:30pm, the race called for six laps at 10 miles each. The plan for the team was to take it nice and easy in the early part of the race. With a traditional Grand Prix start, 16 UTVs side by side would make for some interesting racing action as they all headed for the first corner. "We knew we had a fast car and could run in the front of the pack, so we made sure we had a clean start and worked our way to the front of the pack" said driver Mike Lasher. After the first corner the team was in the 12th spot. Starting in the back made for some intense dust and gave them a slower first lap. By the time the first lap was completed the team had already moved into 5th place. As the laps continued to count down and competitors began to have problems, the Pro Armor Teryx continued on its pace and battled the 10 mile course that was getting rougher and rougher with each lap. Running at an average of only 29mph, this race showed how slow the pace was given the conditions. The Blue Water Grand Prix put on by Best in the Desert had an outstanding variety of terrain to travel through. The team battled silt beds, rocks, water, mud, gravel, sand, steep ridges, and even had to navigate through an old house that was part of the racecourse. The CST Performance +3" long travel kit and Fox Racing Shox really made a nice addition in the tight confines of the house as other vehicles were taking out walls due to their width. The suspension was able to soak up the rough terrain of the Parker desert without missing a beat allowing the team to run in the front of the pack all day. When the dust cleared the Pro Armor Teryx had moved into third position and was one of only 4 cars to complete all 6 laps. Finishing in the third position at the Blue Water Grand Prix, moved the team into the first position in the season points standings and also opened up the biggest lead of the year. The next race on the schedule for the team is the Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno "the long way" which will be 1000 miles spread out over three days in the Nevada desert August 20-22, 2009.For more photos and information on the Pro Armor Kawasaki Teryx built by Side X Side Outfitterz you can visit www.lashermotorsports.com

2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sport Review

2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 SportRide Review:

As the owner of a pretty tricked out 2008 Kawasaki Teryx, I am very familiar with the Teryx. My Teryx did not stay stock long, but I recently spent three days in a bone stock 2008 Teryx on a ride to the Grand Canyon.

The 2008 Teryx is a great machine, but my biggest complaint was that it came out with carbs instead of fuel injection. In less that a year since the first Teryxs hit dealer floors, Kawasaki dealers are already selling 2009 Teryxs with EFI. The New digital fuel inject on the Teryx is really nice. The engine starts right up and idles smoothly. On acceleration, the 2009 Teryx felt more crisp and seemed to get up to top speed a little quicker. While it is not a night and day difference, I definitely preferred everything about the EFI on the 2009 over the carburetors on the 2008.

Next up on the list of what's new is a fuel gauge. I know it doesn't seem like something to get that excited about, but I do some long distance rides, and the fuel level display takes the mystery out of "I wonder how much fuel I have left?"

The Teryx Sport has upgraded aluminum wheels which not only look much better, but are also 2.2 lbs. lighter than the standard steel wheels. Losing unsprung weight not only requires less energy to get the tires spinning, but also helps the suspension work better. And as a little bonus, the aluminum wheels are actually strong that their steel counterpart.

Suspension is on the 2009 Teryx Sport has a few upgrades as well. The gas-charged Kayaba shocks have reservoirs all the way around to help reduce fade in rough terrain. The preload adjustment is step-less, and they have fully adjustable rebound and compression (high and low speed) damping. Although we did not have any opportunities to jump the new Teryx Sport, we did get into some nasty whoops and hard g-outs.

I felt the Teryx Sport suspension handled the terrain better than a standard Teryx suspension. The ride through the light chop was a bit smoother than a standard Teryx and when we got into the whoops I felt a little more comfortable as well. Although I was able to bottom out the front shocks on a few hard g-outs, a standard shock would have gone to the stops more often and with more force. Overall, even though I did not spend any time trying to fine tune the adjustments on the new Sport shocks, I think they are a worthy improvement over standard shocks.

The Lime Green plastic on the Teryx Sport is a great color. Much more sharp than the drab green found on the 2008 Teryx. And with all the UTVs out in the dunes in Glamis, there is no doubt that you are in a Kawasaki when you are driving it.

The 2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sport has a MSRP of $11,899.

Jagged X’s RANGER RZR Finishes “Best in the Desert” Series Strong and Takes Championship for Second Year in a Row

Minneapolis, December 9, 2008 – Jagged X and their No. 1919, RANGER RZR finished the “Best in the Desert” series strong with another win at the “Henderson Fabtech Desert Classic” this past weekend. The win finished another dominating season that brought Jagged X and the RANGER RZR their second, consecutive BITD championship.

The Jagged X/Polaris Racing RANGER RZR team had already secured the season championship but was determined to finish the season as strong as possible. The field had a surprising number of entries with 10 teams lining up at the start for the approximately 150 mile race. The No. 1919 started in the sixth position driven by Blake Van De Loo and performed perfectly for the four-hour race. After swapping the lead several times, the RANGER RZR was able to pull ahead and take the first place finish by more than 10 minutes.

This race marks the fifth consecutive win for the Jagged X/Polaris Racing team which began the season with two second place finishes. This is the first time a Side-by-Side has completed every single race mile for an entire racing season in the BITD series. The Side-by-Sides also are the only class competing in a seven race season, with all other classes racing five races. The race also marks the 14th consecutive finish for the Jagged X RANGER RZR. These accomplishments proves the RANGER RZR is the hardest working, hardest racing Side-by-Side available.

“Polaris would like to congratulate Jagged X on their second Best in the Desert Championship,“ said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “The Jagged X team has been extremely dedicated to the RANGER RZR racing effort and their continued success and second championship is well deserved. We look forward to the 2009 race season with hopes Jagged X will continue its win streak and secure another championship.”

In the first-year of production for the RANGER RZR, Jagged X did the unthinkable and won the 2007 BITD championship. Jagged X got their first podium, taking second, at the 2007 “Blue Water Grand Prix” and took their first first-place at the 2007 “Vegas to Reno” race and never looked back. They finished the season with three first-place finishes and one second-place and the BITD championship.

In 2008, Jagged X and the No. 1919 started the season with two second-place finishes and then went on a tear finishing the season with five consecutive first-places, and the 2008 championship.

“The RANGER RZR is an amazing platform for our desert race program and we have to thank Polaris industries for their continued support,” said Bill Schueler of Jagged X. “We all work very hard together to finish and win races, and will stay on the cutting edge of Side-by-Side racing as our sport’s popularity continues to grow.”

New Teryx Winshield from HunterWorks.com

New unbreakable and uncrackable material, same great coating.
I will tell you why you should consider it.
Reason 1:
We found a company that makes windshields for NASCAR and they have a proprietary chemical they flow onto Acrylic or Polycarbonate and then bake it on and the result is the MOST scratch resistant windshield next to glass which is very break prone.
Any other windshield out there requires special cleaners and special rags because they scratch so easy. You can use gas and steel wool on ours to clean it, it doesn't hurt it.
As a matter of fact we took a piece of steel wool and ran it under a windshield wiper on the windshield for three straight days and no scratches. Try that with the others!!
People ask, "Can you scratch it?", yes you can with a screwdriver or something but not with dirt on a rag or cloth like the others out there.
Reason 2:
With any other windshield including the half windshields dust is a big problem because of the vacuum created behind the windshield as you travel. Ours has a vent all the way across you can open on warmer days and allow the air to flow thru upsetting the vacuum therefore cutting down on dust.
Reason 3:
All windshields including half windshields are hot in the summer, on ours just open the vent up by loosening the four knobs on the vent and slide it open to let the air flow thru all the while protecting your face
Reason 4:
Our windshield is fully trailerable with no worry about bowing the windshield since we have the two pieces of aluminum angle to give it support.
Reason 5:
Our windshield is by far the clearest windshield available next to glass, see the photo below taken from inside the cab.
Reason 6:
Now with new material it won't break or crack, see our video.

“I am a very lucky man, being involved in so many different projects over the years and now this with Dragon Fire Racing, I'm very excited. I can't wait for everyone to see this race car and team at the CORR races. It'll turn some heads and trust me we'll win some races".

Elka suspension designed all new shocks with 8 inch remote reservoirs for increase cooling capacity, as well as bigger diameter shock bodies and shock shafts due to the increased travel.

Hanging racing billet brake Pedal, with a remote reservoir was developed to give the driver more space in the driving compartment.
