Called by some to be the Nascar of the Mud Racing world, and in the style of the famous Florida Sippy Hole Races, this event consists of an oval track carved out of an East Texas hillside and features water depths ranging from 6 inches to nearly 4 feet where 3 or more racers compete head-to-head for 3 laps.

Whether you want to compete or just want to watch, you don’t want to miss the Mudda-Cross!

Dynojet Bad 2 da Bone
When you come to High Lifter's ATV Mud Nationals you are sure to see some of the most outrageous ATVs and RUVs ever built. Some are built out of necessity to get through the mud at Mud Creek and some are built just for the reaction they receive from fellow ATV riders. Where is the best place to see these extreme machines? At the Bad 2 da' Bone competition held in the front vendor area. Here you can see them up close, take pictures and ask questions about these extraordinary creations.

OR if you think your quad or RUV has what it takes to win the cash and take home the trophy, bring it on!

Event Registration :
You must first register at the Information/Registration tent located next to the High Lifter Retail Store. Registration cut off time will be Thursday, March 25th at 3:00 PM. Entry fees are non-refundable.

The competition will be held Thursday, March 25th at 4:00 PM on vendor row in front of the High Lifter Retail Store

EPI Endurance Challenge
If there is one thing Mud Creek is well known for it’s the high line area. This is where you find one of the biggest, baddest, nastiest NATURAL mud holes in all of East Texas, AND this is where you find the EPI Endurance Challenge during The High Lifter ATV Mud Nationals.

This competition consists of two-man (or woman) teams willing to try their skills in the toughest mud-holes in the park. We don’t call this the Endurance Challenge for nothing. Teams will start at one end of the high line and make their way down to the marked end and back. Teams will be timed and the winner is determined by “speed” (some past winners have been known to average up to almost 10 MPH!!!). Teams may choose to use one or two ATVs for the competition…but at least one ATV and both teammates must cross the finish line to score. Push, Pull, or Drag…anything goes. If the team in front of you abandons a quad…it is considered an obstacle…go around it! If it’s stuck…winch from it!!!  You never know how it will turn out or who will win!

Event Registration :
Sign up at the High Lifter Information/Registration tent before Friday, March 26th at 10:00 AM.  Entry fees are non-refundable.

Event Location, Date, & Time :
A mandatory drivers meeting and then staging will occur at 11:00 AM on site at the "High Line" with the event to begin immediately afterwards on Friday, March 26th at 12:00 PM

Tell the BLM in Southern Nevada they need a Comprehensive plan for OHVs in thier Planning Effort

BAKERSFIELD, CA (FEBRUARY 25, 2010) –The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is revising their 1998 Las Vegas Resource Management Plan. A Notice of Intent was filed and they are currently taking public comment until February 28, 2010. The area managed by the BLM Las Vegas office has some of the most diverse and highly prized off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation opportunities in the country.

OHV recreation is a huge economic driver in southern Nevada. The BLM has the opportunity, through this planning process, to help grow OHV tourism in their area by providing more and higher quality OHV opportunities. We need to encourage the BLM to do this by submitting comments during the scoping process.  You can go to our website www.orba.biz and click on the link to send a letter to the BLM.

SR1 Demo at Stadium Kart World Championships is a Success

By: Joey DiGiovanni, UTVUnderground.com
The SR1 Demo at the Trophy Kart World Championships was the first opportunity for fans of UTV racing in Southern California to see the new SR1 UTV class in action.  Weller Racing brought 2 cars with them to California not to mention Tyler Herzog who made the drive from Arizona to join Gary Thompson and Corry Weller on the track at Milestone MX Park in Riverside, CA.
Although only 4 cars took the track these 4 cars gave a glimpse as to what this season of LOORRS has in store for us.  These Rhino’s equipped with Yamaha R1 street bike motors came to life on a track that was designed for Stadium Karts but the R1’s showed that even a tighter course is no match for the 130+hp Yamaha Rhino’s.

The race wasn’t without failure as Corry Weller went out mid way through the practice round with a blown oil line which caused a small fire under the car.  This would prove to be the end for Corry as she was down on power in the main due to the loss of oil.  Despite the rough day the spirits were high in the Weller pits as they are prepared to address the problem and get Corry’s car prepped and ready to go for Rounds 1 and 2 of Lucas Oil.  Corry Weller will have a fresh set of paint and graphics for Lucas and she told me she was very excited to see her car transform in the coming weeks.

Another competitor rolled his car that Weller had brought out after installing their new SR1 kit.  Unfortunately his day was cut short with a violent roll over that at the end of the crash resulted only in some bent aluminum, cracked fiberglass, and 2 blown tires fortunately.

The winner Gary Thompson battled it out all day with Tyler Herzog who was not afraid to throw his SR1 into the corners hard making for some exciting high speed turns.  Tyler was clearly the faster driver in the practice rounds but MotoGary saved his juice for the main where he led the race the entire time driving a flawlessly and really ripping the Milestone dirt up with his SR1.
In all it was a great display of just what these cars can do.  They were fun to watch and listen too and it wasn’t hard to tell by the smiles on the drivers faces that they had an amazing time putting these UTV’s on display for us all to see.  The SR1 class is here and we cannot wait to follow it closely in the inaugural 2010 season.

NOHVCC creates videos to help riders protect trails

The National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) has created a Public Land Advocacy Video Workshop series with help from Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. via their OHV Access Initiative, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), the Specialty Vehicle Institute of American (SVIA), and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA).  The workshops are designed to give riders the skills they’ll need to keep trails open in their areas; covering everything who the enthusiasts are, planning a trail system, writing effective comments, moving forward from route designation, and much more.
The series consists of 14 easy to watch sessions ranging from 15 to 30 minutes each.  The content is based on NOHVCC’s successful onsite workshop sessions with NOHVCC topic experts.  The sessions are designed to give the people who can’t participate in an on-site workshop or a webinar the tools they need to help keep their trails open.
Russ Ehnes, Executive Director of the NOHVCC said “These are tight economic times and we need to take advantage of technology to help riders get the information they need.  This program is helping us reach thousands of OHV activists and riders who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to take part in a NOHVCC workshop.  This may be one of the best tools that we have created so far for not only the enthusiast’s toolbox, but for program managers as well.”
The workshop modules were developed in cooperation with the American Motorcyclist Association, BlueRibbon Coalition, Motorcycle Industry Council, Off-Road Business Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and United Four Wheel Drive Associations
To order a DVD, e-mail us at trailhead@nohvcc.org or call us at 800-348-6487. The DVD will be shipped to you free of charge, courtesy of the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative.

AMA criticizes lack of trail maintenance funding in latest federal budget

PICKERINGTON, Ohio – Many off-highway motorized trails in America’s national forests could deteriorate dramatically or even disappear under the new federal budget for 2011 proposed by President Barack Obama to Congress on February 1, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
Under the proposal, which must by accepted by Congress before it becomes law, funding for the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Capital Improvement and Maintenance (CIM) program would be slashed by $100 million from the $538 million appropriated for the current fiscal year, which began October 1, to $438 million for the next fiscal year.
“This could be disastrous for off-highway motorcycle riders because CIM program money is used for the improvement, maintenance and operation of U.S. Forest Service roads, trails and recreational support,” said Ed Moreland, the AMA’s vice president for government relations.
Moreland notes that in explaining the reduction, President Obama’s administration says that it wants to focus the Forest Service on “road decommissioning, erosion control, watershed health and forest restoration.”
“Very little of the proposed CIM budget supports trail-building or maintenance,” Moreland said. “This is another way to limit trail-riding opportunities for families, the disabled and others who enjoy the beauty of our federal lands on motorized vehicles.
“The truth is that underfunded forest managers will find it more expedient to close trails rather than maintain them with this plan,” Moreland said. “Proper funding of maintenance programs are crucial to the administration’s stated goals of erosion control, watershed health and forest restoration.”
The administration’s budget proposal is also disturbing because it comes at a time when the Forest Service is creating a new planning rule to manage the 193 million acres it controls nationwide. The Forest Service says it is starting the process guided by the principles of restoration, conservation and protection of ecosystems. This proposal could shut out off-highway riding.
The AMA strongly advises its members and all other off-highway vehicle riders to contact their federal elected officials and urge them to oppose any cut in the U.S. Agriculture Department’s capital improvement and maintenance budget.
Contact information for all federal elected officials can be found at AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Rights > Issues  Legislation, then enter a zip code in the “Find your Officials” box. Additionally, a prewritten e-mail is available to send to federal elected officials immediately by following the “Take Action” option.
About the American Motorcyclist Association
Since 1924, the AMA has protected the future of motorcycling and promoted the motorcycle lifestyle. AMA members come from all walks of life, and they navigate many different routes on their journey to the same destination: freedom on two wheels. As the world’s largest motorcycling rights organization, the AMA advocates for motorcyclists’ interests in the halls of local, state and federal government, the committees of international governing organizations, and the court of public opinion. Through member clubs, promoters and partners, the AMA sanctions more motorsports competition and motorcycle recreational events than any other organization in the world. AMA members receive money-saving discounts from dozens of well-known suppliers of motorcycle services, gear and apparel, bike rental, transport, hotel stays and more. Through its Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, the AMA preserves the heritage of motorcycling for future generations.

OBAMA SECRET PLAN FOR MONUMENTS COMPELS CONGRESSIONAL ACTION

POCATELLO, ID (February 19)  - - The BlueRibbon Coalition, a national recreation access group, today asked Congress to pass legislation that mandates public involvement in any future Presidential National Monument designation. The Coalition says legislation is necessary in light of recently leaked secret plans for 13 million acres of new National Monuments in 11 western states.
The group's Executive Director, Greg Mumm, said, "The time for Congress to act is now. A sitting President should not be allowed to unilaterally reserve millions of acres without some public input and congressional oversight."
Don Amador, BRC's Western Representative, stated, "The list of potential new Monuments includes world class recreation sites like the San Rafael Swell in Utah and the Stonyford OHV Area on the Mendocino National Forest in Northern California. These National Monuments will certainly impact recreation. The public must be given the opportunity to review the impacts to recreation before Monuments are designated."
The Coalition's request comes on the heels of the release of a document labeled "NOT FOR RELEASE" which details plans for 14 new or expanded national monument designations, totaling some 13 million acres of public and private land. The request was made in an open letter to Congress explaining why legislation is immediately needed.
Elected officials in the affected states have historically opposed such large Monuments as a misuse of the Antiquities Act, the law that has been interpreted to allow the President to designate National Monuments. In a letter sent to President Obama yesterday, top Republicans on the House Natural Resource Committee asked that any new designations be as small as possible and be made with greater transparency.
Utah Senator Robert Bennett also sent a letter to Department of Interior (DOI) Secretary Ken Salazar referencing President Clinton's designation of the 2 million acre Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM) in Utah. Bennett wrote, "As you may be aware, when word of the impending GSENM designation began to leak out in 1996, Clinton Administration officials obfuscated and lied, including to me personally, about their intentions.  Their correspondence at the time acknowledged that they knew that, had elected officials from the state of Utah been made aware earlier, it likely would have resulted in the unraveling of their plans for the monument designation.  This was an appalling abuse of executive power and has sown the seeds of significant distrust with your department that continues to this day."
BRC's Public Lands Policy Director, Brian Hawthorne, noted, "Former President Clinton used the Antiquities Act 22 times to designate nearly 5.9 million acres of public land as National Monuments.  All of these designations far exceeded the 'smallest area compatible' guideline to preserve the resource and nearly all were designated without any public input or consultation with state and local officials." The Coalition noted that in the legal challenges to Clinton's monuments, the Supreme Court stated clearly that the separation of powers applies, and it is Congress's role, not the courts, to address any Presidential abuse of the Antiquities Act.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Relocates Season Opener

Corona, California (February 19, 2010) ˆ The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series has relocated the first event of 2010, March 6th and 7th, to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Lucas Oil Executive Vice-President, Bob Patison spoke on the move to the new facility in Las Vegas.

Due to recent unrealistic demands made by the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park management, the environment of the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park no longer remains conducive to providing the atmosphere for a first class event. We have taken great pride in developing spectacular venues for our fans and racers alike to showcase the excitement of our short course off road racing series. While failing to meet their commitments, the management of the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park has complicated our relationship to the point that we now feel the best course of action is to transition away from this venue as we pursue an alternative site in the Southern California region. We are grateful to the staff of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for assisting us in making this as smooth a transition as possible while we look forward to our first event at this fantastic new location.

Kicking off the 2010 season, rounds 1& 2 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series will be held on a brand new, mile long, purpose built track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway featuring the highest banked turn on the Lucas Oil Off Road circuit. With its ten turns and giant table top, this technical track brings the high flying door to door exhilaration of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series to Las Vegas for the first time ever.

Ticket prices are $30/day for adults, $10 for children. Weekend passes are available for $50/adult and $15/child. Children three and under are admitted free. Reservations are now being taken for a limited number of on-site, trackside R.V. spaces available on a first come first serve basis. To secure a weekend R.V. spot at $200 please contact Crystal Liby crystal@lucasoiloffroad.com.

ATV Fatalities and Injuries Decline According to CPSC Report

IRVINE,CA - A report released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC 2008 Annual Report of ATV Deaths and Injuries") shows a continuation of the decline in fatalities and injuries associated with all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use. According to the CPSC, total ATV-related injuries in 2008 decreased 10 percent from 2007, with injuries to children under 16 declining six percent.
CPSC also reported that the risk of injury per 10,000 four-wheel ATVs in use declined by 15 percent from 2007 to 2008. This is the seventh straight year that injury risk for ATV riders has decreased, and it is now lower than at any time since CPSC began calculating this injury risk in 1985. Four-wheel ATVs have become increasingly popular with an increase of more than 300% since 1998 in the number of vehicles in use to over 10 million.
"The CPSC report again shows that the commitment of the member companies of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) to rider education, parental supervision, and state legislation is working," said Paul Vitrano, executive vice president, SVIA. "Since 1984, the major manufacturers and distributors of ATVs in the United States have worked closely with the CPSC to implement ongoing safety initiatives."
In 2009, the industry's voluntary ANSI/SVIA standards were made mandatory as a result of federal legislation. The mandatory standards require all ATV manufacturers and distributors, regardless of where the product is manufactured (imported or U.S.), to adhere to the same safety standards and training programs established and followed by the SVIA member companies for more than two decades. This includes newer companies in the U.S. market that had previously elected not to participate in safety programs developed by established manufacturers and in some cases targeted inappropriate models to youth riders. Under the legislation, all ATV manufacturers now must certify that their products conform to the mandatory standards, and file safety action plans with the CPSC.
SVIA, however, remains concerned that the effective ban on the sale of youth model ATVs resulting from the lead content provisions contained in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act will likely result in children under 12 years of age riding the more accessible larger and faster adult-size vehicles, creating - in the CPSC's own words - a "more serious and immediate risk of injury or death" than any risk from lead exposure.
"CPSC studies have found that approximately 90 percent of injuries to children under 16 occur on adult-sized ATVs," said Vitrano. "We strongly encourage the CPSC and Congress to end the ban on the sale of youth model ATVs and motorcycles."
The ATV industry is committed to the safety of its customers and will continue to promote and enhance its multi-tiered efforts to increase awareness of the proper operation and use of ATVs. Unfortunately, more than 92% of ATV-related fatalities involve one or more behaviors that the industry strongly and visibly warns against in its rider education programs, in all its literature, and on the vehicles themselves.

To that end we urge all ATV enthusiasts and their families to follow the Golden Rules:
1. Always wear a helmet and other protective gear.
2. Never ride on public roads -- another vehicle could hit you.
3. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
4. Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle.
5. Ride an ATV that's right for your age.
6. Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.
7. Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.
8. Take an ATV RiderCourse; call toll-free at 800.887.2887, or take the free E-Course at www.atvsafety.org.

The Specialty Vehicle Institute of America® promotes the safe and responsible use of all-terrain vehicles through rider training, public awareness campaigns and state legislation. Additionally, the SVIA works to preserve access to off-road lands and expand riding opportunities. The SVIA is a resource for ATV research, statistics and vehicle standards. Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the SVIA develops standards for the equipment, configuration and performance requirements of ATVs.

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association Urges Enthusiasts and Industry to Comment on CPSC’s ROV Rulemaking

ROHVA Creates www.rohva.org/anpr to Facilitate Submission
The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) is calling on enthusiasts and industry representatives to submit comments by March 15, 2010 in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) proposed mandatory standards for Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs), also known as side-by-sides and UTVs.
ROHVA previously expressed disappointment with CPSC’s October 2009 vote to issue an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPR) for mandatory ROV standards. ROHVA believes this action is premature because an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) process to develop standards for ROVs had long been underway. Since that time, the process has been completed and the proposed ANSI standard is under final review. Components of the standard include protective gear requirements, a certified roll-over protective structure, a minimum of three point seatbelts for each seating position, and multiple lateral stability criteria.
ROHVA has created a web page - www.rohva.org/anpr - for enthusiasts and industry representatives that contains explanations of ROHVA’s position on ROV standards and links to important documents. The page also contains a link and other resources to facilitate stakeholders’ submission of comments on the CPSC's ANPR.
“ROV stakeholders need to be heard on whether the appropriate next step to establish ROV standards is moving forward with CPSC-imposed mandatory federal standards or instead gaining experience under the ANSI standards and promoting the ROV Safety Rules available at www.rohva.org,” said Paul Vitrano, ROHVA executive vice president.
The ANSI standard development process involves a variety of interests including CPSC and other government representatives, industry, consumers and others. Participants reach a consensus on an appropriate ANSI standard for ROV equipment, configuration and performance requirements.
ROHVA has met several times with CPSC staff in an effort to address their concerns about the ANSI standard.
“ROHVA appreciates the Commissioners’ and CPSC staff’s interest in and willingness to discuss key technical issues, and our dialogue has been productive,” Vitrano said. “While there is agreement between CPSC and ROHVA on many aspects of ROV standards, there continues to be disagreement over some important technical issues, including vehicle stability, vehicle handling and occupant protection and retention”
Vitrano concluded, "It also should be noted that the overwhelming majority of ROV operators and passengers use the vehicles safely and responsibly and benefit from the unique recreational and utility capabilities of these vehicles.”
The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association is a national industry organization that promotes the safe and responsible use of ROVs. ROHVA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop equipment, configuration and performance standards. Based in Irvine, Calif., the not-for-profit association is sponsored by Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris and Yamaha. For more information visit www.rohva.org.

HiPer debuts its new PROFill race proven flat prevention system at Indy

LAWRENCE, Kan, February 10, 2010– HiPer will debut its new PROFill race proven flat prevention system at the 2010 Indy Dealer Expo.  Under development for over a year, PROFill’s advantages are weight, superior cornering, affordability, ease of installation, and the ability to make quick adjustments for maximum suspension performance and traction.
Weighing 30% less per wheel than other flat prevention systems and unable to absorb water, PROFill gives riders increased performance.  PROFill can be inflated through the normal valve stem and requires no special tools to tune tire pressures.
PROFill eliminates the cornering “chatter” and vibration of other systems reducing rider fatigue while increasing cornering performance.  To add more performance, PROFill is available in soft and hard compounds which can be mixed together for medium compounds tuned for the specific track and conditions.
The PROFill system will initially be available in ten inch front and nine inch rear combinations for cross country racing.  With retail prices expected to be under $100 per wheel, the PROFill system is an unmatched value.

(YMC) today announced plans to transfer its all-terrain vehicle (ATV) production currently in Japan to the United States.  With this transfer, the production capacity of YMC’s Japanese subsidiary – Yamaha Motor Powered Products Co., Ltd. (YMPC) – will be integrated into YMC’s U.S. subsidiary based in Newnan, Georgia – Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC).
The move, currently in the planning stages, is scheduled to begin in early 2011 and is intended to optimize manufacturing capacity and improve productivity.  The transfer will facilitate the consolidation of both production management and manufacturing technologies, as well as afford an increased level of responsiveness to market needs by maximizing production in the United States, the country with the largest demand for ATVs.  The production transfer to Newnan, Georgia, is expected to be complete by 2013.
“We are pleased to have this additional ATV production transitioning to YMMC in Newnan, Georgia,” said Mike Martinez, General Manager of ATV & SxS Operations, Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.  “We expect this transition to have a positive impact on the local economic community and provide worldwide recognition for our state-of-the-art facility and its ability to produce durable and reliable off-road vehicles.”
YMMC currently manufactures ATVs ranging in engine displacement from 250cc to 421cc.  The production transfer will increase the facility’s production lineup to include a wide range of Yamaha ATVs up to models with large 700cc engines.  This transfer allows YMPC to concentrate on manufacturing generators, multi-purpose engines and golf cars, while YMMC will also continue to manufacture golf cars, personal watercraft and Side-by-Side vehicles.

Polaris Industries Announces Acquisition of Engine-Developer swissauto Powersports

Expertise from Switzerland-based Company will enhance Polaris’ engineering capabilities and broaden geographic reach

MINNEAPOLIS (February 3, 2010) — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:  PII) today announced its acquisition of swissauto Powersports. Based in Burgdorf, Switzerland, swissauto has expertise in designing and developing high-performance and high-efficiency engines and innovative vehicles. The acquisition will further strengthen Polaris’ global engine and vehicle design capability while also enhancing the company’s European presence.
Founded in 1987, swissauto’s core capabilities are in development, prototyping and manufacturing of internal combustion engines. Polaris has a long history of working with swissauto. The high-performance, four-stroke Weber engine that Polaris uses in several current snowmobile models was developed by swissauto.
In addition to recreational vehicle engines, swissauto also has a strong tradition of developing top-tier racing engines for World Motorcycle GP. The company’s V4 2-stroke 500 cc engine drove 29 wins, 41 Poles and 3 World Championships during the 1990s. A completely new racing bike was also developed by swissauto and competed aggressively against larger Japanese OEMs during the late 1990s. This bike achieved the pole position twice during it’s first season of racing and ranked in the top ten several times.
“Swissauto has industry leading powertrain design and development capabilities and a strong understanding of turbo-charging and high-performance engines,” said Polaris Chief Executive Officer, Scott Wine. “This acquisition directly supports our stated objectives to be the best in powersports and a global market leader.  ”
Polaris acquired the powersports portion of swissauto and will continue to operate in the current swissauto facility located in Burgdorf, Switzerland. The automotive division of swissauto was not involved in this acquisition and will continue to operate autonomously.

COALITION OPPOSES PLAN TO LOCK UP PUBLIC LANDS IN SOUTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA

RAPID CITY, SD (February 3)-A controversial proposal from the South Dakota Wild Grasslands Coalition to lock up a large area of the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands (BGNG) has been met with stiff opposition from a broad group of stakeholders. Recreational users joined cattlemen, landowners, state legislators, and local county commissions in opposing the move. Senator Tim Johnson agreed to sponsor legislation that would put nearly 50,000 acres off limits to most uses, including casual OHV and mountain bike use.
The BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC), a national trail-based recreation group, recently sent a letter to Senator Tim Johnson asking for a public hearing on the proposal. In the request, BRC's Executive Director, Greg Mumm, of Rapid City, observed that,"... I struggle to understand the need for such a designation."
The areas in Johnson's proposal are managed by the Nebraska National Forest and are a national showcase for active grassland restoration. Destructive industrial activities are already banned, and the land managers currently have a productive and cooperative working relationship with user groups and local governments. Mumm said today, "These lands are already being managed well; there is no need for Washington DC to shove its nose in what is already a successful management of public lands."
In a letter to Senator Tim Johnson in January, South Dakota Governor Rounds asked the Senator to reconsider his decision to introduce the Wilderness legislation, citing that "it is unclear what is protected by this legislation."
Mumm agrees.  "Our fear is that Senator Johnson has been misinformed by this Wilderness lobby group. South Dakota and the US Forest Service have worked together to carve these productive and vibrant areas of today from what was a virtual wasteland. The proposal to now designate them as Wilderness is a slap in the face to these efforts."  He concluded, "You don't have to look very far in South Dakota but to the Black Elk Wilderness to see a perfect example of the utter failures of the Wilderness designation on our public lands."
Mumm is calling for Senator Johnson to hold open and public hearings on the proposal, as well as a field trip to the area.  "We want him to see and hear the whole story from the people who live here."
The full letter can be viewed online here:

2011 Yamaha Rhino Unveiled

CYPRESS, Calif. – February 2, 2010 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., announces its 2011 Rhino 700 FI Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles, including a new Sport Edition, will begin arriving at dealers this summer.  Yamaha’s leading Rhino continues to hold the top spot as the toughest, most off-road capable and versatile, as well as the all-time best selling, SxS vehicle.
Yamaha ignited unprecedented interest in SxS vehicles when it launched the first Rhino in 2003, and the Rhino line continues to be a category leader today.  Combining Yamaha quality and durability, the Rhino has received nearly every best-in-class award from the ATV and SxS world as well as hunting and farming communities because of its ability to tackle off-road terrain while also serving many utility functions.
For the 2011 model, Yamaha has given the Rhino a new steering wheel and adjustable seat belt providing more rider comfort in off-road conditions.  New to the Rhino line is a White Armor Sport Edition that features fully adjustable piggyback shocks, one-piece cast aluminum wheels, injection-molded sun top, over fenders, Baja-inspired front carry bar, and a special graphics treatment.  The Sport model also comes with dealer-installed LED tail lights, custom shift knob and black bed rails.
The 700-class powerplant is optimized for the Rhino with a liquid-cooled, four-valve SOHC engine providing plenty of torque to tackle rough terrain.  Helping manage that power is the Yamaha Fuel Injection system with unmatched performance and dependability at high elevation and in cooler conditions.
Additionally, the Rhino engine features a forged piston that adds durability and an aluminum cylinder body with ceramic composite coating for decreased weight, increased cooling ability and additional wear resistance.  The roller rocker arms lessen friction in the valve train reducing wear and increasing durability while providing improved throttle response and better overall off-road performance.
Yamaha’s reliable Ultramatic® automatic transmission system features an exclusive centrifugal clutch that allows the drive belt to remain under constant tension providing another key point of durability.  Also exclusive to Yamaha’s Ultramatic system is the one way sprag clutch that provides four wheel engine braking for maximum traction and confidence.
Adding to the Rhino’s terrainability is the On-Command® 2WD/4WD system with differential lock that gives the driver options with the push of a button.  The Rhino 700 FI has 12.1 inches of ground clearance, and its fully adjustable and fully independent front and rear dual A-arm suspension offers more than 7.3 inches of travel.
The Rhino also features large axles and CV joints to best accommodate its engine power.  Front and rear A-arm guards prevent sticks and debris from getting to the boots, but should something find a way past the guards, the CV boot material is tough and resistant to most impacts.
When it comes to braking, the automotive-style pedal controls the four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes with dual piston calipers, which provide unmatched stopping power and feel.  The parking brake lever is located on the center console and engages a separate disc brake located on the axle.
The Rhino 700 FI comes with a number of standard extras and creature comforts, and Yamaha offers more than 100 official and accessories for the Rhino line.  As with all previous models, the 2011 Rhino features a U.S. OSHA and ISO 3471 compliant roll over protection structure (ROPS).  Its 12-volt accessory outlet easily receives a GPS device, spotlight or even a cell phone charger.  The Rhino has padded bucket seats with headrests for both driver and passenger, and a digital meter is standard on the Rhino 700 FI providing self diagnostic capabilities for easy troubleshooting, a voltage meter for monitoring battery condition, and an hour meter function that operates only while the engine is running for more accurate servicing.  The digital LCD multi-function display meter also features a speedometer, odometer, dual trip meter, clock, fuel gauge and gear position display.  The 7.9 gallon fuel tank holds enough gas for hours of riding.
The Rhino 700 FI also comes standard with passenger grab handles and cup holders, as well as tough, rotomolded doors to keep mud, water and trail debris out of the cab.  Helping keep passengers clean and keeping cabin noise to a minimum is the noise and dust shield located behind the seats.  The under-hood, tools-free air filter is another added convenience.  It is a snap to service in its location and an optimized filter size helps the filter stay clean longer.
The Rhino features a standard two-inch receiver and is capable of towing up to 1,212 pounds while the cargo bed is capable of carrying 400 pounds.  The cargo bed features an assisted dump function with tilt levers on both sides of the bed.
The 2011 Yamaha Rhino will be available in Hunter Green, Red and the Sport Edition White Armor in the summer of 2010.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx Gears up for Pit Bull King of the Hammers UTV Race

Shingle Springs, CA (February 3, 2010) - The Pit Bull Tires UTV King of the Hammers race will be held on Thursday February 11th, 2010 in Johnson Valley, CA and the Monster Energy Kawasaki Teryx is finally ready to race. The Teryx will be driven by Reid Nordin of Kawasaki Team Green with spotter duties falling on Jon Crowley.
This year's UTV race will be approximately 60 miles long and includes dry lake beds, sand dunes, desert roads and extreme rock crawling all in one race. "Although this race is shorter than many other desert races, the combination of terrain make it very challenging," commented Jon Crowley, owner of the #1965 Kawasaki Teryx. "This race takes its toll on a UTV, and I think our unique build is well suited to take it on."
After competing is last year's exhibition UTV race, Crowley raced in one Valley Off-Road Racing Association race before embarking on a complete ground up build for this years King of the Hammers UTV race. The frame was stripped down to the main chassis rails that hold the engine and differentials.  Then Roggy Enterprises built the custom chassis and roll cage that incorporate Fox's new 2.0 position sensitive shocks and Funco long travel suspension.
The heart of the #1965 Kawasaki Teryx is a 840cc v-twin with ported heads, big valves, billet throttle bodies and Pro Pipe from Muzzys Performance Products. All the intricate aluminum, wiring and finish assembly was done by Motorsports Fabrications Services (MFS).
"As you can imagine, tires and wheels take a beating and that is why we teamed up with DragonFire Racing and Pit Bull Tires," commented Crowley. The brand new Rocker XOR from Pit Bull Tires combines strength and agility with its 8 ply radial and super deep, soft lugs that grip the rocks. And DragonFire Racing's Baja Crippler beadlock wheels not only look good, but have super stout inner reinforcing  and beadlock rings.
As the driver of record and winner in the UTV class at the 2009 Baja 500 and Baja 1000, Reid Nordin is very capable behind the wheel of a Kawasaki Teryx. "Reid and I have been on several rides together including Moab, the Rubicon and the Grand Canyon. He is a good friend, and a consistent and methodical racer. I am really looking forward to getting to the start line to have some fun."

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association Urges Enthusiasts and Industry to Comment on CPSC’s ROV Rulemaking

ROHVA Creates www.rohva.org/anpr to Facilitate Submission

IRVINE, Calif., — The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) is calling on enthusiasts and industry representatives to submit comments by March 15, 2010 in response to the U.S.
ROHVA has created a web page – www.rohva.org/anpr - for enthusiasts and industry representatives that contains explanations of ROHVA’s position on ROV standards and links to important documents. The page also contains a link and other resources to facilitate stakeholders’ submission of comments on the CPSC’s ANPR.
“While there is agreement between CPSC and ROHVA on many aspects of ROV standards, there continues to be disagreement over some important technical issues, including vehicle stability, vehicle handling and occupant protection and retention.”
Vitrano concluded, “It also should be noted that the overwhelming majority of ROV operators and passengers use the vehicles safely and responsibly and benefit from the unique recreational and utility capabilities of these vehicles.”

Board of Supervisors vote to formalize the alignment of the world-famous Rubicon Trail

Placerville, CA January 26, 2010: El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted to formalize the alignment of the world-famous Rubicon Trail. This decision includes a handful of important bypasses around some of the more difficult sections of trail, providing trail users the option of taking a less difficult route around the toughest segments of trail. In a meeting which lasted well into the night, the Board of Supervisors heard arguments from county residents, off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, environmental activists, the U.S. Forest Service, and the State Parks OHV Division about how to best define the trail which winds through the scenic Sierra Nevada west of Lake Tahoe.

The Board of Supervisors discussed options for addressing a Cleanup and Abatement Order (CAO) issued by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board. The DOT listed three options for consideration, ranging from establishing 1.) a single defined trail, 2.) a defined trail with bypasses around the most difficult sections, and 3.) a ‘corridor’ option which would have included wide areas where specific trails might be defined. In the end, the Board of Supervisors chose the option of a single route with bypasses, which they felt provided the widest range of opportunities for public access while still addressing the CAO. Tom Celio, Director of DOT, stated that all options presented would be able to address the CAO.

This County action formally recognizes the main alignment of the Rubicon Trail and a handful of alternate routes with multiple levels of difficulty near Devil’s Postpile, Forgotten Sluice, Little Sluice, Indian Trail, and the True Old Sluice. Selecting this middle option is a balance between recognizing a single trail and recognizing every existing alternate and bypass. "In reality we lost very little" said Scott Johnston, President of the Rubicon Trail Foundation, “We are still committed to working with the County – this was a good step toward satisfying the Water Board’s CAO."

In a frustrating last-minute twist which caught the public by surprise, the Board of Supervisors also voted to reduce the size of the largest rocks in the iconic Little Sluice Box, a signature section of Rubicon Trail near Spider Lake with high technical difficulty. This controversial proposal, was put forth by Supervisor Jack Sweeney after the public comments session was closed. “I and other members of our volunteer community were blind-sided by the discussion/decision to alter Little Sluice”, said Jacquelyne Bebe Theisen, Trail Boss for the Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR). “Our volunteers deserved the opportunity to discuss the alteration of Little Sluice with the Board of Supervisors – and we will. This is not over.”

RTF and FOTR will work together to push the County Department of Transportation, to lead organizations, and agencies together to identify and employ non-explosive management techniques to minimize impacts at Little Sluice and still comply with the Board of Supervisors’ instructions. In the meantime, FOTR and RTF will continue to work with the County to mitigate concerns in the area by distributing WAG bags (for collecting human waste) and spill kits (for cleaning up fluids spilled by damaged vehicles); reaching out with education from the kiosks, providing roving trail patrol and mid-trail staff; and delivering internet-based education.

On several occasions during the course of the meeting, the Board of Supervisors expressed how grateful they were for the incredible commitment of the (OHV) community who volunteer thousands of hours a year educating trail users, performing trail maintenance, and cleaning up and addressing sanitation issues. The volunteers of FOTR, Jeepers Jamboree, California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs, and many other local clubs and independents have worked together to maintaining Rubicon Trail for more than 50 years.

The joint efforts of the County, the Forest Service, the California OHV Division, and these volunteers provide an unprecedented example of a collaborative process that works, and are a shining example to land managers and user groups across the nation. “We have to move forward, and keep our volunteers motivated. It's going to be a challenge, but we can and will succeed,” Theisen added, “We are relieved that after ten years of discussing the issue of trail alignment with little action, the County has finally identified what routes they will maintain in conjunction with the Volunteers.”

FOTR’s extensive volunteer coalition coordinates with RTF’s federally recognized non-profit organization, and with 8+ years of FOTR volunteerism and 5+ years of RTF fund-raising, we expect that the Rubicon Trail will continue to be an environmentally sound, viable, year-round trail accessible to the public for years to come.
