King's Coilpass Shock handles both suspension and damping in one package

The King, Coilpass shock, is another prime example of King’s ability to conceive and build shocks to fit your application no matter what the design parameters are. The Coilpass shock is used as a primary suspension member to carry the weight of the vehicle and maintain ride height while providing precise adjustability and the high quality ride characteristics King is famous for. It gives you the same performance as a traditional dual shock set-up but with greater simplicity and less weight. The Coilpass also conforms to single shock per wheel rules mandated in certain racing classes. The King Coilpass may look exotic but it uses the same time tested components as the rest of our shock line. This unique design can be built in a dual piston configuration offering both inertia and position sensitive damping in one package. Let King’s engineering prowess and depth of knowledge provide creative solutions to your suspension design challenges. Nothing rides like a King.

Features:

  • 100% made in the USA under the strictest tolerances from the highest quality materials obtainable. Easily tunable and serviceable with simple hand tools.
Lightweight hard anodized 6061 aluminum alloy reservoirs dissipate heat quickly and will not rust due to gas charging contamination. Aluminum components are machined from aircraft quality billet.

  • Shock bodies are precision bored to within +/- .001 to ensure a tight piston seal. We then take the time to hone the bodies after cadmium plating to remove buildup for precise piston sealing and optimum valving function. Coilpass shock bodies are machined with our own truncated thread design for ultimate strength and trouble free spring adjustments.
High quality fittings are mated to Aeroquip high pressure hoses, when remote reservoirs are used, which resist abrasion and allow a tighter bend radius without kinking like braided stainless lines do.

  • Steel Teflon lined spherical bearings for smooth articulation and long life with no metal to metal contact.

  • Special long wearing urethane seals and wiper have been tested on 18 wheelers for 450,000 miles without a failure.

  • Heat treated stainless alloy valve shims have a unique grain structure that does not fracture and remains stable at high temperatures to maintain consistent valve function.

  • Wear bands are made from an exclusive Teflon bronze composite that wears longer than any other material available. The same material is used on beds and ways of precision cnc machines.

  • The heat treated 6061 aluminum alloy piston has our highly developed port configurations that contribute to the unique damping performance and famous King ride quality.

FLUIDYNE® Powersports' Baja 500 Utility-class-winning radiator is now available for the Arctic Cat Prowler

FLUIDYNE® POWERSPORTS' BAJA-WINNING RADIATOR NOW AVAILABLE FOR ARCTIC CAT THUNDERCAT AND PROWLER

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (October 28, 2009) - A mighty, FLUIDYNE® Powersports-radiator-equipped Thundercat 1000 has won every SCORE desert race of 2009, including the Baja 500, and more recently, finished the 1000-mile Vegas-to-Reno race--beating 10 sport quads along the way.
Such commanding performance comes at a price: additional engine heat, which can lead to overheating, short-term power loss, premature oil breakdown or worse.
That's why FLUIDYNE® Powersports is unleashing a torture-tested radiator for this race-capable utility ATV and Arctic Cat's Prowler side-by-side vehicle.
Developed for the thunderous, 950cc V-Twin these big Cats share, this beefy, super-efficient radiator boasts a dual-row, 57mm core with 35 rows of tubes that gives it 34 percent more fluid capacity than stock, significantly lowering coolant temperatures.
This performance upgrade keeps the Thundercat and Prowler motors at optimum temperatures in low-air-flow riding conditions and provides consistent cooling in high-speed situations.

FLUIDYNE's® new radiator for these Cats is also stronger and more durable than their OEM units. Constructed from aircraft-quality aluminum, structural improvements include thicker materials throughout, a CNC-machined billet filler neck and beaded hose connections for leak-proof sealing. These components are held together with substantial TIG welds to withstand extreme conditions and produce a crash survival rate far exceeding the stock radiator. The FLUIDYNE® unit is topped off with a stainless-steel cap rated at 21 psi to attain a higher boiling point and prevent overheating.
Not only does FLUIDYNE® Powersports' Thundercat/Prowler radiator out-cool and outlast the stock unit, it comes with a one-year warranty and installs easily, utilizing the factory mounts and hardware.
Developed and manufactured in the United States, FLUIDYNE® Powersports radiators are built upon 50 years of experience in vehicular fluid dynamics and have been proven around the world.
Available for the Thundercat, Prowler and other late-model ATVs, side-by-side vehicles and motorcycles, FLUIDYNE® Powersports radiators are sold through dealers nationwide. In the desert, woods or on the jobsite, FLUIDYNE® Powersports radiators keep things cool when the heat is on.

Radflo Suspension Technology Releases Innovative New Off-Road Jack

Hydra-Jac Promises Faster, Easier Tire Changes Without Breaking Your Back

Fountain Valley, CA – October 2009: If you've ever tried to change a tire off-road using an ordinary jack, you know how frustrating and even dangerous the exercise can be. The emergency jack supplied with your vehicle is useless if you have a suspension lift. And that old-fashioned cast iron jack that you've been lugging around is great for agricultural purposes, but it's not exactly ideal for today's high tech off-road machines. The awkward size makes it difficult to store in your vehicle, the immense weight is cumbersome to transport, and the constant rattling is downright annoying.

The hydraulic specialists at Radflo Suspension Technology have heard your frustrations and developed a proper off-road jack that allows you to change tires with more speed and less sweat than ever before. The Hydra-Jac is a technically advanced, lightweight racing jack designed specifically for the off-road enthusiast. This clever adaptation of the "high-lift" jack provides the long-travel range you need without the cumbersome size and weight of conventional designs.

Features
Adjustable jacking platform adapts to your off-road application: Simply preset the adjustable jacking platform to the proper position for your vehicle and the generous 18" lift range will elevate a disabled tire into the air on the most flexible suspensions.

Quickly raise or lower your vehicle with minimum effort: The convenient, fold-away handle makes operation easy and efficient. In most cases, no more than 4 pumps are required to raise your vehicle a full inch. Release the bleed screw to lower the vehicle – you can even control the rate of descent.

Heavy duty hydraulic ram provides impressive load capacity: The massive 7/8" ram allows you to safely hoist loads up to 2,200 lbs. in almost any conditions without fear of failure. Like our shocks, the Hydra-Jac is completely serviceable and rebuildable for a lifetime of service.

Lightweight yet ultra-strong construction eliminates strain: A combination of lightweight alloy materials makes transportation and operation truly painless. At only 13 lbs., you can easily load or unload the jack without breaking a sweat.

Space efficient size provides more storage options: When fully collapsed the overall length is a compact 37", allowing you to stow the Hydra-Jac in locations where your current "high lift" jack would never fit.

For more information or to place an order, contact Radflo Suspension Technology at (714) 965-7828, via e-mail at info@radflo.com, or on the web at www.radflo.com.

Imperial Sand Dunes Season Ramps Up With New Road, Increased Emphasis on Safety

The new season for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area opens with the newly constructed Wash Road and an increased emphasis on safety, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today.

According to Vicki Wood, BLM El Centro Field Office manager, “The new road allows the public continued access to camping areas via street-legal vehicles south to Wash 25 from State Highway 78.” The new road has a speed limit of 15 mph and parallels a road on Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way that the public will no longer be able to use.

“Camping too close to Gecko Road, continues to be a safety concern,” says Wood. “Along this main transportation artery of the North Dunes, parking or camping within 10 feet of the road is prohibited. BLM rangers and the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office can issue tickets and tow vehicles to achieve compliance.”

“BLM,” Wood said, “will continue its education campaign to increase awareness and compliance of youth all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rider rules in effect since 1988. A rider course is offered throughout California and on-site at the Dunes during winter months. If a child is found to be riding without an ATV Safety Certificate or is unsupervised, the parent or guardian will be ticketed.”

California state law requires that all ATV riders under 18 years of age possess an ATV Safety Certificate issued by the state or be supervised by an adult possessing the certificate. All ATV riders under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult. More information regarding the ATV RiderCourse, including free enrollment, can be found at www.ohv.parks.ca.gov or by calling the ATV Safety Institute, (800) 887-2887.

The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest mass of sand dunes in California. They were formed by windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla and extend more than 40 miles in a dune system averaging five miles in width. More than a million off-highway vehicle enthusiasts recreate annually on the dunes, which can rise more than 300 feet above the desert floor. The dunes also offer unique scenery, as well as opportunities for solitude and viewing rare plants and animals.

Modular Rapid-Convertible System (RCS) for 2010 Polaris Ranger Provides Maximum Flexibility

Worcester, MA. October 1, 2009 - Curtis Industries, LLC has introduced a new, revolutionary, modular cab system for the 2010 Polaris Ranger utility vehicle available early October. This system allows rapid transformation from a fully enclosed cab to an open-air ride in only 60 seconds. The Curtis Rapid-Convertible System (RCS) allows the user to choose one or all components for maximum flexibility as the weather changes.

A simple ROPS base frame with cab receiver mounts provides safety and easy installation of the modular components. Initial installation time is approximately 2 hours, half the time as other cab systems! The roof, windshield and rear panel feature a unique, quick-release pin to slot connection and a heavy duty quick release latch. The strong but lightweight hard-coated polycarbonate Quantum coated windshield quickly vents for varying temperatures and is designed and tested for full speed travel with the windshield open or closed. An optional wiper kit is also available.

Cab panels are designed using advanced technology and materials. The Rapid-Convertible System uses thermoformed TPO material (not ABS plastic or fiberglass) for all body panels. TPO offers superior low-temp impact resistance, higher heat-deflection and greater dimensional stability than ABS or fiberglass. This cab features door and rear panel sliders that are made of Impact Modified Acrylic to allow airflow and access from the cab.
Available in black, cab components – base frame, roof, windshield, doors, and rear panel – can be purchased as a complete cab or cab without doors. US and Foreign patents pending.

CPSC Takes Big Step Towards Safety Rules for UTVs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Furthering its commitment to improve the safety of Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles (ROVs) and reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries nationwide, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted to publish an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) to address safety hazards associated with vehicle ROVs.

CPSC staff’s preliminary evaluations indicated that the vehicles may exhibit inadequate lateral stability, undesirable steering characteristics, and inadequate occupant protection during a rollover crash. The staff reviewed the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) draft proposed American National Standard for Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles, ANSI/ROHVA 1-200X and found preliminarily that it does not adequately address the deaths and injuries associated with ROV rollovers and collisions.

The ANPR invites written comments from the public regarding the risks of injury associated with ROVs and ways in which these risks could be addressed. Following publication of the ANPR, the public will have 60 days to provide comments to the Commission. Comments can be submitted at www.regulations.gov

In conjunction with the vote, CPSC chairman Inez Tenenbaum issued the following statement:

"The need for federal rulemaking on ROVs is the consequence of not having a voluntary standard that effectively safeguards consumers. I have reviewed numerous death and injury reports tied to ROVs and I believe CPSC can play a vital role in making them safer. While we work on new safety rules for ROVs, I urge all riders and passengers to strap on a helmet, use the seat belt, know the terrain, and never allow anyone under 16 to drive these vehicles."

The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association is a national industry organization that promotes the safe and responsible use of ROVs. ROHVA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop equipment, configuration and performance standards. Based in Irvine, Calif., the not-for-profit association is sponsored by Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris and Yamaha.

Long Travel Industries introduces their new Kawasaki Teryx Long Travel kit

ANAHEIM, CA – OCTOBER 22, 2009: Long Travel Industries introduces their new Kawasaki Teryx Long Travel kit. It is designed to be a 100% bolt on kit, which gives the Teryx a 5” over stock increase in A-arm length per side.

After extensive R&D on the Kawasaki Teryx suspension needs, Long Travel Industries produced a 5" over stock increase in A-arm length per side with a wheel base alteration combined total of 2”. The wheel travel has been set at 14" in the front to prevent C/V binding at full droop with the wheels turned, and a matched 14” of travel in the rear. These specifications were engineered to minimize push in the corners and give ample tire clearance with an aggressive look. The A-arms are constructed from 4130 Chromoly plate and fully TIG welded for the ultimate design in rigidity and toughness, yet coming in under weight than most other round tube kits.

All chassis pivot points are precision machined which allows the use of the stock bushings and crush sleeve. Both front upper and lower A-arms use a 7/8” stainless steel Teflon coated bearing to replace your stock ball joints. Long Travel Industries 17-4 stainless steel misalignments / taper pins and adapters are used to bolt the A-arms to the factory spindle for maximum strengths and articulation.

The kit includes four King Shocks specifically valved for Long Travel Industries and is also complimented by Long Travel Industries own front and rear 300M axles. All of the kits ship with all 4 spherical bearings preinstalled for your convenience.

Total installation time is 5-7 hours, with professional technical support available. No drilling is required. As a final quality assurance test, every A-arm goes through a final packaging Q/C fixture to make sure that you will not need a come-a-long, a ratchet strap, a sledge hammer or a grinder to install their A-arms.

Long Travel Industries is once again delivering a suspension system that will take all the abuse you can throw at it and is backing it by their unconditional lifetime guaranty on all A-arms.

Race Results from the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Speedworld

Race recap from www.lucasoiloffroad.com

Friday Qualifying:
The final class on the track for qualifying was the UTV class. Chad George only needed three laps in his Funco/King Shocks Kawasaki to take the pole position, and he bettered his personal best time in each of these three laps. George eventually ended up with a best time of 1:03.213, taking his second pole of the day! Austin Kimbrell took second place today in his #607 machine, setting a personal best time of 1:03.900, while young RJ Anderson took third with a best time of 1:04.083 in his #637 Walker Evans Racing Polaris. Robert Vanbeekum wound up fourth in his #664 with a time of 1:04.859, and Mark Holz rounded out the top five in his #673 Holz Racing Products machine, setting a time of 1:04.950.

Saturday Race:
The #639 of Kenny Bates and the #673 of Mark Holtz had the front row starting positions for today’s UTV race thanks to a six position inversion of yesterday’s UTV qualifying results, but it was Austin Kimbrell in the #607 Xtreme Machine and Fabrication machine who got by both these guys to take the early lead. RJ Anderson spun in turn four and collected some of the frontrunners in the process, and Robert Vanbeekum was black flagged for an early incident, making for an action-packed first lap. With one lap in the books, Kimbrell was the early leader, and was followed by Holz, Bates, and teammates Chad George and Tyler Winbury. George moved up to the third place in his #624 Funco Kawasaki on lap two, and young Winbury took over fourth place in his #694 Beard Seats Kawasaki on the following lap. As the competition yellow flag came out, Kimbrell still led over George and Holz, with Winbury and Bates sitting fourth and fifth. Winbury pulled off the track on the yellow flag lap, which moved Anderson’s #637 Walker Evans Racing Polaris up into the top five. As the green flag flew again, it was Vanbeekum who’d made the biggest move, pulling into third place behind Kimbrell and George. Anderson then pulled off the track, and Corry Weller’s beautiful-sounding Yamaha R1-powered Ranger, which she was driving only as an exhibition of the new SR1 UTV class, moved into fifth spot physically after starting dead last. With just one lap to work with, Vanbeekum, who’d worked his way clear through the field after being black-flagged early on, made up some huge ground to pass both Kimbrell and George to take the lead and the win! Kimbrell and George, who must have been somewhat dumbfounded, ended up in second and third places, with Holz’s Holz Racing Products machine taking fourth and Roger Stokes rounding out the top five in the #657.

Saturday Results:
1 664 Robert Vanbeekum
2 607 Austin Kimbrell
3 624 Chad George
4 673 Mark Holz
5 610 Corry Weller
6 657 Roger Stokes
7 699 Brent Fouch
8 723 Hans Waage
9 744 Tyler Herzog
10 605 Scott Nimmo
11 711 Robert Ouellette
12 637 RJ Anderson
13 639 Kenny Bates
14 694 Tyler Winbury
15 681 Doug Mittag
16 800 Dan Kelly
17 606 Todd Ouellette
18 655 John Dempsey

Sunday Race:

The first race to run on the full-length track today was the UTV race. This morning’s pole winner Chad George had to settle for an eighth place starting position thanks to a four row inversion, while Tyler Winbury and Mark Holtz started on the front row. Holz took the early lead in his #673 Holz Racing Products Polaris, ahead of Austin Kimbrell, yesterday’s winner Robert Vanbeekum in the #664 Xtreme Machine and Fabrication Kawasaki, George, and Roger Stokes. Kimbrell moved his UTV Underground Kawasaki into first, and Vanbeekum and George also passed early leader Holz to take over second and third. By the time the competition yellow flag waved, RJ Anderson had also moved his #637 Walker Evans Racing/Goodyear Polaris past Holtz, and after the restart, he briefly stole third spot from George before George got that position back later in the same lap. Vanbeekum then pulled off the track and out of the race, allowing Stokes to move his #657 HRT Motorsports machine back into the top five. On the final lap, Anderson made an unbelievable desperate run through the moguls to pass both Kimbrell and George to take the lead! However, Anderson somewhat overshot the turn at the end of this section, and Kimbrell was able to retake the lead and hold on for the win. SCORE International announces Five-Race Schedule for 2010 SCORE Desert Series

Las Vegas Events approves new sponsorship for SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge;
43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 to be a peninsula race in Baja California

LOS ANGELES—Preparing to celebrate its 37th year as the world’s foremost desert racing sanctioning body, SCORE international officially announced today its five-race schedule for the 2010 SCORE Desert Series. SCORE CEO/President Sal Fish also confirmed that Las Vegas Events has approved the sponsorship for January’s SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and that November’s season-ending 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will be a peninsula race in Baja California, Mexico, starting in Baja California and finishing in Baja California Sur.
“With everything going on right now with the world economy, SCORE has decided to contain the costs of our entry fees at as close to the level of 2008 and 2009 as possible and we are excited about the prospects of a peninsula race for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000,” said Fish. “The three SCORE races annually produce over $30 million in overall economic impact for Mexico and it will be good for Baja California Sur to receive its share of this tourism influx our events bring to Baja in 2010. Being able to move the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge back a week is also a popular decision by the Laughlin Tourism Commission.”
Keeping the same venues and nearly the same race weekends for its five open desert races as the past five years, the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will again feature two races in Southern Nevada and three in Mexico. After being held a week later for several years, the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge will be moved back to its traditional dates on the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Las Vegas Events approved the sponsorship of the 2010 event on Wednesday.
“We have incredible marketing partners on both sides of the border, the world’s greatest desert racers and the world’s toughest race courses, so we will make only minor changes for the 2010 SCORE season,” added Fish. “Our five-race schedule in both the U.S. and Mexico offers tremendous variety for the racers, sponsors, media and fans.”
“With necessary restrictions in place for spectators in the U.S. still our attendance continues to rise, but in Mexico, it’s absolutely unbelievable. Our crowds for the last nine races in Baja California have averaged over 250,000, and SCORE racers are as popular in Baja California as any racing figures in the world.”
The SCORE Desert Series, which features 29 Pro and six Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycle and ATVs, will kick off Jan. 15-17 with the popular 16th Annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in the Southern Nevada resort city of Laughlin on the banks of the Colorado River. The season will conclude Nov. 17-21 with the 43rd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
“The SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge is the most unique and one of the most popular desert races in the U.S. and the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is the best known desert race in the world,” added Fish, who has been at the head of SCORE since 1974. “These two races provide wonderful ways to start and finish our SCORE racing season.”
The 2010 SCORE Desert Series will again start with the most unique and the shortest race of the season and finish with the oldest and most recognized desert race in the world. After starting the season in Laughlin, 90 miles south of Las Vegas, it will conclude with the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, which is always a unique and memorable special race.
Since its debut in 1995, the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge has helped establish Laughlin as a viable host for special events. Thousands of spectators join nearly 150 racers and their crews in converging on the city each year to watch the best of the best desert racers compete in a unique-format, two-day race that includes a temporary stadium surrounding the start/finish line area and the main pits.
A total of 18 different Pro and two Sportsman classes for cars and trucks are split into five groups in Laughlin, running half of the race each day. The SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge also includes a pre-race activity that is not part of any other race on the schedule—the $16,000 Laughlin Leap. The Laughlin Leap will be held under the lights for the first time on Friday evening of race week at the Laughlin Events Park. The Laughlin Tourism Commission in association with SCORE has decided that shortening the overall window of the event from four days to three is in the best interest of both the participants and the multitude of spectators that enjoy this special event each year.
Round 2 and 3 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will both be held in Mexico. The 24th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 is set for March 12-14 in San Felipe, Baja California, followed by the 42nd anniversary of the vastly popular Tecate SCORE Baja 500, June 4-6, in Ensenada, Baja California.
Round 4 will be the 15th Annual SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 which will be held Sept. 10-12 in Primm, Nev., 45 miles south of Las Vegas.
SCORE officials will announce before the end of the year exactly where the 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will start and finish.
SCORE International, founded in 1973 by the late Mickey Thompson and headed by Sal Fish since 1974, continues today as the premier sanctioning body in the sport of desert racing. SCORE races feature 18 Pro and three Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in the U.S. with 11 additional Pro and three more Sportsman classes for motorcycles and ATVs competing in the races in Mexico. SCORE races in the U.S. average 150 entries while the average in Mexico, with motorcycle and ATV classes running as well as the cars and trucks is 300.
Current SCORE official annual sponsors are: BFGoodrich Tires-official tire, Volkswagen of America-official vehicle, Sunoco Race Fuels -official fuel supplier, Bilstein-official shock, Instant Mexico Auto Insurance-official Mexican auto insurance, Slime-official tire sealant and Red Bull--official energy drink. Associate sponsors are: Tecate Beer, Coca-Cola of Mexico, Las Vegas Events, Terrible Herbst Inc., Blue C Enthusiast Advertising, SignPros, P.C.I. Race Radios, McKenzie’s Performance Products and Advanced Color Graphics.
The SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge is sponsored by the Laughlin Tourism Commission, the Laughlin Visitors Bureau, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Las Vegas Events.
The SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 is sponsored by Las Vegas Events, Primm Valley Resorts and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Additional associate sponsors for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 are Fideicomiso Publico para la Promocion Turistica de Ensenada and the State Tourism Department of Baja California.

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association Disappointed With Consumer Product Safety Commission Ballot Vote

The Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) is disappointed that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a ballot vote on the agency's staff recommendation to proceed with a rulemaking process for recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs) by publishing an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR).
ROHVA believes this action is premature as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) development process for ROVs is currently underway. The ANSI standard development process requires involvement from a variety of interests. Participants involved in the process, from the US and Canada, include CPSC and other government representatives, industry, consumers and others and those participants will reach consensus on an appropriate ANSI standard for ROV equipment, configuration and performance requirements. ROHVA has met and communicated with CPSC as part of the ANSI process. Following the first meeting in December 2008, ROHVA made several modifications to the standard based on CPSC's comments at this initial meeting. Formal comments to the initial draft standard were due on July 13, 2009. CPSC submitted no comments prior to this deadline, then submitted a letter dated August 7, 2009, requesting new changes to the draft standard regarding stability, vehicle handling and occupant retention and protection. In response, ROHVA submitted a letter to CPSC dated August 14, 2009 requesting any data, research or analysis supporting the CPSC staff's recommendations. To date, CPSC has yet to respond to ROHVA's request and no additional information was provided to ROHVA or in the CPSC staff briefing package. While awaiting a response from the CPSC to our request, ROHVA retained a nationally known independent expert on vehicle dynamics to evaluate the comments from CPSC staff in order to continue the ANSI process with the benefit of additional expertise. ROHVA expects to issue a revised draft standard, incorporating many participant suggestions, in the coming days. We are confident that through continued discussion and information sharing, an appropriate standard that reflects the input from all parties can be developed through the ANSI process. We look forwarding to continuing to work with CPSC and other parties in these efforts.

Yamaha Outdoors Announces Second Annual Ag Comm Scholarship Program

National ACT Members Encouraged to Apply for Individual and Chapter Awards

CYPRESS, Calif. – October 15, 2009 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., is now accepting applications for its second annual scholarship program that provides financial assistance to members of the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT). ACT is a national college student association with 354 members located on 17 college and university campuses across the country. ACT’s mission of fostering professional development is at the core of the Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program.

The Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program is broken out into two individual student scholarships and one chapter scholarship. All three scholarships are aimed at helping students attend the annual Agricultural Media Summit (AMS), a professional development and networking opportunity.

For the 2008-09 program, the University of Florida received Yamaha’s chapter award, while Whitney Siegfried and Katherine Kuykendall, both ACT members from Purdue University, earned the individual scholarships.

“The Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program is integrating messages of safe, responsible ATV and Side-by-Side vehicle use into the farming community by working with current and future communicators in the agriculture industry,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS marketing manager. “Yamaha again congratulates the inaugural recipients of this scholarship program, and we’ve been happy to receive some very positive feedback from the students. We encourage all ACT members to get involved and submit individual and chapter applications.”

“This scholarship competition is one of the most practical scholarship programs I’ve seen,” said Dr. Jefferson D. Miller, ACT faculty advisor and associate professor of agricultural communications at the University of Arkansas. “It requires students to create an actual example of journalistic or public relations work – something they can add to their professional portfolio. Plus, the reward is that they get to go network at AMS with the people who will probably be hiring them in the near future.”

The AMS is the largest gathering of crop and livestock media professionals in the country and is the ACT’s primary career development networking opportunity each year. The conference is hosted by the Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) and the Livestock Publications Council (LPC) – potential future employers and colleagues of the students.

Applicants are judged based on merit, need and quality of submission materials by a review committee consisting of Yamaha representatives and members of the American Agricultural Editors’ Association and the Livestock Publications Council. The 2009-2010 application process will run through the end of February and winners will be announced in early May 2010. More information and guidelines, along with the application form, can be found online at www.nactnow.org.

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series returns to SpeedWorld Off Road Park - October 17 and 18

Corona, October 13, 2009: The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series is returning to SpeedWorld Off Road Park in Surprise, Arizona this weekend, October 17th and 18th. The host of Rounds 3&4 in May, SpeedWorld's short course off road racing debut hosted enthusiastic, standing room only crowds. With its signature high banked turns, wide open straight-aways and challenging mogul section, the track is establishing itself as the home to some of the most exciting racing in off road. Now, with the series return, SpeedWorld will once again come alive as the expected sold out crowd will witness the thundering horsepower of 850hp trucks along with buggies, Karts and UTVs attempting to tame the 9/10th mile track.

Seasoned professional Robert Naughton has led the Unlimited Lite truck class from the first green flag of the year in Primm. But, while Naughton appeared to be running away with the division by virtue of his 6 round wins, the consistency of Hart&Huntington's Chris Brandt has kept him in the hunt to challenge for a class championship. Brandt, taking his first win of the season in round 8 at Lake Elsinore, now sits within sight of Naughton with Metal Mulisha General Brian Deegan holding on to the third spot. Naughton, Brandt and Deegan all have been victorious this season and with their eyes on the Unlimited Lite championship, all three will hang it all on the line to gain an advantage.

As one of the most prolific drivers in short course off road racing history with 84 wins, it's no surprise that Lucas Oil's Carl Renezeder sits atop the standings in both Unlimited 4 and Unlimited 2. Now, with U-4 class newcomer Alan Pflueger and U-2 Rookie Jeff Ward holding the second spots in their respective divisions, the veteran is facing tough competition from an unlikely duo. Pflueger in his U-4 K&N machine will be looking to narrow the gap Renezeder holds while fending off the hard charging Kent Brascho. Speed Technologies' "Wardy," who has been nothing short of impressive in his short course off road racing debut, is looking to cap off his rookie season with an Unlimited 2 class championship.

Other Class leaders entering rounds 9&10 are John Harrah in Superlite followed closely by Chad Leising, Chuck Cheek in Unlimited Buggy and Bruce Fraley in Limited Buggy. Currently leaders in the UTV Classes are Chad George in Unlimited UTV, Hanz Waage in Limited UTV and Dan Kelly in Modified UTV. Sheldon Creed is at the top of the standings in both Jr.1 and Modified Karts while Trent Williams is pacing the field in Jr.2 Karts.

Rounds 9&10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Saturday October 17th & Sunday 18th SpeedWorld Off Road Park Surprise Arizona Gates Open at 9am.

YOSHIMURA RELEASES PIM-2 EFI SYSTEM

Chino, Calif. - October 12, 2009 - Yoshimura has just released the next generation in fuel management systems for fuel injected Motocross, Off-Road motorcycles, and ATVs. The PIM-2 (Peripheral Interface Module) installs easily, typically in under 30-minutes using simple Plug-N-Play technology. Just plug the PIM-2 into the stock wiring harness using the supplied sub-harness, mount it to your bike using the supplied mounting kit, and you are ready to race!

Yoshimura has been at the forefront of fuel injection tuning for many years through its Superbike Racing program. Now, with the proliferation of EFI into the dirt world, Yoshimura has utilized this vast experience in creating these remarkable devices.

The PIM-2 comes pre-loaded with two separate fuel injection maps for either a Yoshimura Slip-On or Full Exhaust System. Maps for additional pipe brands or engine modification configuration can be downloaded from the Yoshimura website.

The bottom line is the PIM-2 provides a noticeable improvement in performance and the ability to custom tune your motorcycle to virtually any preference or condition.

Current adjusting devices offer coarse adjustment. The PIM-2 offers a much finer level of adjustment to personalize your machines power characteristics. The PIM-2 features over 400 adjustment points in +/- 1% increments with full range mapping every 500 rpm at 10% throttle intervals. It comes with a Plug-n-Play complete wiring harness and is simple to install with basic tools. An instructional video is also included.

Limitless custom tuning is now at your fingertips with a PC laptop and easy to learn, intuitive software. Mate the PIM-2 with Yoshimura's optional self-mapping DATA (Digital Advanced Tuning Assistant) kit for the ultimate in performance tuning either on the track or the dyno.

The DATA kit consists of an air fuel sensor and amplifier box that plugs into the PIM-2, and allows for self-mapping of a motorcycle or ATV. The DATA box automatically calculates the required fuel adjustment at each RPM and throttle position to reach the user selectable target air fuel ratio. The kit comes with all of the required hardware, but may require modification of the exhaust pipe to accept the air fuel sensor fitting.

The PIM-2 and DATA unit are available at your local dealer for all fuel injected models of ATVs and off-road motorcycles.

BFGoodrich Tires and BlueRibbon Coalition Join Forces to Raise Money for Trail Preservation

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Oct. 10, 2009 - BFGoodrich Tires and BlueRibbon Coalition announced today a partnership that will benefit off-roaders and off-road trails alike. BFGoodrich Tires will make a $5 donation to the BlueRibbon Coalition for each of its new 10 sizes of BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tires sold between August 2009 and December 2009.

Due to consumer demand, BFGoodrich recently expanded its line of Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire sizes, which are part of the 10 sizes eligible for the contribution. The tire sizes are as follows:

  • LT345/75R16 LRD • 38X14.50R18 LRD
  • LT365/75R16 LRC • 40X14.50R18 LRC
  • 38X14.50R17 LRD • 38X14.50R20 LRD
  • 40X14.50R17 LRD • 40X14.50R20 LRC
  • 36X13.50R18 LRD • 42X14.50R20 LRC

"The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tire has set the standard in the world of off-roading, both for competitive and recreational uses" said Gary Enterline, senior product category manager, light truck tires for BFGoodrich Tires. "What better way to give back to the community that made the tire what it is today than by teaming up with the BlueRibbon Coalition to help preserve our off-road trails."

As a respected national recreation group that represents more than 600,000 recreationists nationwide, the BlueRibbon Coalition is dedicated to protecting responsible recreational access to public lands and waters.

"This generous donation from BFGoodrich Tires will help the BlueRibbon Coalition continue working to keep public land open for use, whether you recreate on a mountain bike, snowmobile, motorcycle, personal watercraft, ATV, four-wheel drive, horse or your hiking boots," said Greg Mumm, executive director of BlueRibbon Coalition.

Inspired by the BFGoodrich Tires Krawler(tm) T/AKX tire, which is the most successful tire in rock-crawling history, BFGoodrich Tires incorporates Krawler TEK(r) technology into the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 TriGard(r) sidewall. Krawler TEK technology consists of three main components: aggressive sidewall lugs, cut- and chip- resistant sidewall compounds and sidewall cords that are up to 33 percent stronger than the previous Mud-Terrain T/AKM tire. These advancements allow for more bite and sidewall protection along with increased strength and resistance to bruising caused by rocks and rough trails.

More information about the BlueRibbon Coalition is available at www.sharetrails.org.

Using motorsports as a proving ground for more than 30 years, BFGoodrich Tires is involved in every type of racing, including oval, sports car, drifting, drag, desert, dirt, rally and extreme rock-crawling. OHV's Restricted in Sensitive Plant Communities at the Oregon Dunes

October 1, 2009

Corvallis, OR –The Siuslaw National Forest is implementing a Forest Closure Order that went into affect August 18, prohibiting off-highway vehicle (OHV) use from posted areas immediately adjacent to Beale, Snag and Horsfall lakes to protect plant, fish and wildlife habitat.

“We have the responsibility to provide for multiple uses, such as clean water, forest resources and recreation while managing for existing native plants and wildlife species found within the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area,” said Pam Gardner, Central Coast and Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area District Ranger.

The areas near dune lakes require protection because they contain uncommon plant communities, including bog blueberry shrubland, found only sporadically along the coast in Oregon and northern California. These protected areas also provide habitat for a number of unique species, such as western pond turtles, the hoary elfin butterfly, bald eagles, bog clubmoss, adder’s-tongue and endangered western lily.

The goal for these areas, identified as Management Area 10(F) in the 1994 Oregon Dunes Management Plan, is to maintain, create, enhance or restore a variety of special plant, fish and wildlife habitats.

“Other pressing management actions, such as the alcohol ban and designated dispersed camping, along with daily demands of managing such a high use area, took our attention for some time,” add Gardner

Other 10(F) areas are located outside of OHV management areas at Siltcoos, Loon, Carter, Lost, Perkins and Elbow lakes and the Takenitch Dunes.

“We’ll be using education as the first phase of implementation and then issue warning tickets, as needed,” according to Gardner. “Repeat offenders will receive citations from Forest Law Enforcement Officers,” she added.

For more information on the closure, please contact the Central Coast Ranger District/Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area at 541-271-6071.

In the News: Dune lakes off limits to ATVs

There will be no more joyriding around the Beal and Snag lakes on the south end of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

Off-road enthusiasts who get a thrill skirting the perimeters of those dune lakes could face a fine of up to $5,000 or six months in jail for disturbing sensitive plant communities. The Siuslaw National Forest is implementing a Forest Closure Order prohibiting all vehicles from riding near the lakes because of the bog blueberry and other sensitive plant species.

The plant is rare on the Oregon Coast and Northern California, according to a press release from the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Region. Forest Service officials say motorists pose a considerable threat to fragile habitats.

Holz Backed Racers Score Wins and Secure Championships

Coast-to-Coast Podiums for Holz Racers During the Month of September

Lynden, WA (October 7, 2009)- Holz Racing Products racers were proving the quality and performance of Holz performance goods throughout the month of September with podiums, class wins and season championships in UTV and ATV racing series events across North America. The victories came back-to-back in the Side-x-Side Stadium Series where RJ Anderson of Walker Evans Racing and Holz Racing Products, drove his Holz built RZR chassis to win in Round 7 and Round 8 UTV competition at the Perris Auto Speedway in California. The first of those two victories also secured RJ the year-end point championship.

Moving east to Arizona and Round 7 of the ITP QuadCross series, Holz backed racers nearly swept the Open Pro ATV podium during the September 19th, Speedworld MX night in Surprise, Arizona. Jeremie Warina led the way followed by Josh Frederick for a one, two finish.

The following weekend, Holz racers headed west, to compete in the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) at the historic Glen Helen Raceway in Devore, California. The event marked the second to last event of the season in the series and an opportunity for Dillon Zimmerman of Team Motoworks Can-Am/Holz Racing Products to capture the year-end point title. While he failed to win on the weekend, his third place finish was enough to garner him the season championship… congratulations Dillon!

That same weekend just down the road, RJ Anderson and his Walker Evans Racing/Holz Racing Products RZR was knocking down more podiums in The Off-Road Championship Series (TORC) held at the Perris Auto Speedway. With back-to-back events Friday and Saturday, RJ scored a win Friday night in the UTV class and an oh-so-close second place finish Saturday evening. With just two races to go in the TORC series, RJ has a 7-point lead in the battle for the year-end title.

Finally, it was a pair of racers new to the Holz Racing Products fold, who were north of the border at Montreal Canada’s Olympic Stadium for the Montreal Supercross proving the toughness and performance of Holz products and securing more wins for the month. Riding for Team Motoworks and Holz Racing Products, John Natalie (Houtzdale, PA) and Chad Wienen (Galena, IL) put on a convincing performance in the main event, taking the top two podium spots respectively. Look for many more top finishes from this experienced and wicked fast duo.

Congrats to all Holz equipped racers for an incredible month of competition. Stay tuned as year-end championships will be decided and in the coming weeks, and many Holz racers are poised to bring home more honors and accolades.

Elka’s extensive after-sales services demonstrated at DuneFest 2009

Elka at DuneFest 2009During the highly popular DuneFest event held in Winchester Bay Oregon, Elka’s professional technicians were kept busy all weekend sharing their knowledge of suspension with all attendees. The Elka booth was highly popular because of massive following Elka has earned over the past five years of attending DuneFest.

No matter the make of the ATV, mini ATV or Side X Side, Elka’s dedicated crew didn’t hesitate to help with rider and vehicle-specific preload, compression and rebound settings. The technicians offered support, servicing, and tuning advice for all Elka customers or prospective customers. In fact, Elka’s staff even helped people riding stock shocks to enjoy a good weekend of riding by setting their suspension as much as possible; within the limited adjustability range available on those. Quite a few simply opted to purchase Elka shocks at the event and benefit from the technicians’ presence to have them dialed-in properly for them.

Elka at DuneFest 2009The crew then performed clinics for Elka customers on how to properly set up the shocks for their vehicle and riding style, as it applied to the dune terrain at DuneFest. “This has been our philosophy at Elka since day one 10 years ago, we love coming to this event and seeing our customers each year and teaching them how to properly set their vehicles up.” - said Eric St-Louis, sales representative present at the event.

This effort contributed once again to the success of Elka’s presence at DuneFest. Be there next year to experience, once again, customer service at its best!

About Elka:

Elka has over a decade of experience engineering and custom-building championship-winning suspension and steering products for powersports applications such as Motorcycle, ATV and Side-By-Side Vehicles. Elka’s reputation and success were built upon maintaining a strong connection with its customers and making sure its products address their needs and surpass their expectations. Hi-Lift Now Has A Jack For UTVs

The “original power tool” of the off-road market is now available to meet the ever-increasing demands of the UTV market with this specialized Hi-Lift® jack model. Sized perfect for UTV operators (off-roaders, farmers, ranchers, search and rescue personnel, and the general outdoorsman) with 36” and 42” models, each weighing less than 30 lbs.

The Hi-Lift® UTV jack is superior to the factory-supplied UTV jack in that it allows you to lift the UTV from many locations, instead of being limited to specific points under the vehicle. It offers greater capacity with a 7,000 pound tested and 4,660 pound rated load limit. Additionally, the Hi-Lift® UTV jack outperforms the factory-supplied jack in that it is a true “multi-purpose tool” that provides the ability to lift, winch, pull, spread, and clamp. It can be used in all conditions… water, mud, sand and even snow.

The Hi-Lift® UTV jack is available with a full-line of Hi-Lift jack accessories, that make it even more valuable and efficient for many applications. Now, with the recent development of the Adjustable Tube Mounts, the Hi-Lift® UTV jack can be mounted easily and securely to any round or square tubing locations on a UTV… front/rear bumpers, bull bars, roll cages and/or roof racks.

The Hi-Lift® jack is the standard in the off-road market because of its multitude of uses. In addition to the obvious off-road applications, imagine the benefits for farmers and ranchers, search and rescue personnel, and the general outdoorsman. UTV’s are commonplace on farms and ranches. The Hi-Lift® UTV jack can be used to pull fence posts, lift tractors and implements, and even aid in the recovery of stuck trucks and equipment. Search and rescue personnel often use UTV’s to get to remote areas where regular rescue vehicles can’t reach. The Hi-Lift® UTV jack can be used for a host of rescue and extrication applications. As a back-up for the “jaws of life” tool, rescue personnel can even remove a car door or spread metal to rescue trapped victims. The varied uses are limited only by one’s imagination.

The Hi-Lift® UTV jack will be introduced to the market first at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. It will soon be available to purchase through many Powersport dealers and distributors nationwide.

Hi-Lift can be found on the web at: www.hi-lift.com.

Polaris RZR Passenger Grab Bar Doubles as a Lug Wrench

Replace your factory grab bar with a new slick new ATR grab bar and get a bonus socket fitting that turns the bar into a lug wrench.

It features top of the line MX grips from Oury that have billet clamps on both ends so they will not spin loose. Oury is known for making some of the nicest, most durable, and most comfortable grips around.

A 3/8" socket fitting allows you to use a socket that fit factory lug nuts or change to a socket that fit larger aftermarket lugs.

We love this idea because it is a hassle to carry a full lug wrench with the limited space found in a Polaris RZR, and the fold up kind always seem to break.

Now you can have a lug wrench with you at all times without the extra weight and space. Not to mention the handle looks sick!

CNC machined aluminum center with solid 1" 6061T aluminum for the main bars. Socket end comes in gloss black powder coat. All stainless hardware included.

ATR OS Handle mounts into factory Polaris RZR passenger grab bar mount. OS Handle features multiple mounting holes so that you can adjust the distance.

For more information visit ATR's website at www.atrpowersports.com or call them at 817-581-0041

The 2010 Kawasaki Mule 610 4X4 XC is now more capable off-road

Newest Mule Offers Expanded Off-Road Capabilities

After more than 20 years of service, the Mule name has come to define a whole category of hardworking utility vehicles. For 2010, here’s an entirely new take on everyone’s favorite beast of burden: The Kawasaki Mule 610 4x4 XC appears to have been crossbred with Kawasaki’s Teryx™ RUV. Aggressive 26 inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 radial tires mounted on 12-inch wheels give it new found off-road ability—and a slew of upgrades designed to complement its suddenly more aggressive nature, infuse the new Mule XC with something it’s never really been known for: This Mule is cool.

The standard Mule 610 4x4 was nearly unstoppable, but the new 4x4 XC takes that a giant step further. Not only do those burly 26 inch Maxxis tires provide a bunch more traction, their greater width increases the Mule’s track by 1.3 inches and their greater height gives the new Mule a full 8.1 inches of ground clearance. To accommodate that new capability, new 1.1 inch longer front and 1.5 inch longer rear suspension help the Mule climb over larger obstacles than ever, while standard skid plates protect vital systems.

To make room for those new tires, the new Mule’s front bumper’s been kicked forward about 1.2 inches, and while they were at it the Mule team added sporty new graphics—also a new, more comfortable seat covered in a more pliable material, and a smaller-diameter sport steering wheel lifted straight from the Kawasaki Teryx.

In spite of its new capabilities and the fact the XC looks like an entirely new vehicle on the outside, you can rest assured that its legendarily reliable and economical drivetrain remains intact on the inside. A durable, 401cc fan-cooled overhead-valve engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) feeds power to all four wheels as needed, and simple, automotive controls mean it couldn’t be much easier to operate. An enrichening system partially opens the throttle for easy engine starts, hot or cold, and the Mule can be started in forward (Hi or Lo) or reverse gear, provided the brake pedal is applied. Select 2WD or 4WD, and away you go.

MacPherson strut front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering combine great bump absorption with light handling, and the Mule’s mid-engine layout and swingarm rear suspension provide great traction at the rear. An upgraded braking system brings it all to a reliable halt.

Fun as it looks, the XC is all about hard work, with a new special black texture paint applied to its 400-pound capacity tilting bed for even greater long-lasting looks and durability, and 1,100-pound towing capacity that means you can bring whatever you need. Dual cup holders keep thirst at bay when you’re on the clock, a capacious glove box can carry more than just gloves, and the front hood pops open to reveal more than 12 gallons-worth of storage. Popular accessories include an enclosed cab, snow plow, winch, and soft or hard tops, available through Kawasaki dealers.

The 2010 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sports a Whole New Look

2010 Kawasaki Teryx 750 EIF 4x4For 2010, the evolution of this incredibly adaptable vehicle continues.....

What's New for the 2010 Kawasaki Teryx:
  • A new hinged, forward-tilting front hood enforces aggressive new styling, and allows quick access to the radiator and front suspension components, for easier maintenance and suspension tuning.

  • New, inset headlights complement the aggressive new styling.

  • A larger radiator fan helps keep engine temps under control in slow going, and a larger-diameter hose increases coolant flow and overall capacity. The coolant reserve tank was moved under the front cover for easier maintenance.

  • A new ignition cut-out feature protects the brake system by preventing riding with the parking brake on.

  • The tilt bed’s frame is engineered with increased rigidity for even greater durability.

  • Other minor modifications aimed at more efficient production and durability keep the Teryx at the front of the RUV pack.

When it roared onto the scene just a couple of years ago, the Teryx 750 FI 4x4’s smooth and powerful V-twin engine and sport-tuned wide-body chassis launched it immediately to the front of the Recreational Utility Vehicle pack. For 2009, the Teryx got digital fuel injection and a host of other upgrades—and now for 2010, the evolution of this incredibly adaptable vehicle continues: An aggressive new front end with a hinged, forward-tilting hood offers front suspension and cooling system access and eases maintenance. Upgrades to the mighty V-twin’s cooling system enhance long-term reliability, and an even sturdier tilting bed out back provides extra durability. In addition, a host of detail improvements for more efficient production and vehicle longevity are designed to do what Kawasaki has always done: keep the performance high while keeping the bottom line low.

Power, is of course, at the heart of the matter when it comes to a performance machine like the Teryx, and when it comes to power no other RUV can touch this one’s 749cc 90-degree 8-valve V-twin: Not only is this engine plenty powerful, its 90-degree configuration gives it perfect primary balance, for unmatched smoothness at any rpm—and a great exhaust note that sets the Teryx apart from lesser RUVs.

For 2010, upgrades to the engine’s cooling system add even more reliability: The radiator’s cooling fan (which switches on automatically when needed) is now larger and moves a greater volume of air, while a larger-diameter hose allows greater coolant flow, to help keep the engine cool when the going gets slow and rough. Also, the coolant catch tank has been moved to the front of the machine, where it’s easily accessible under the very cool new tilt front end. While you’re under there, it’s easier to inspect and clean the Teryx’s gas-charged preload-adjustable shocks and dual, long A-arm front suspension setup.

The Teryx’s advanced digital fuel-injection system already included functions for automatic altitude compensation, automatic idle adjustment and easy, choke-free starting via a sophisticated array of sensors for inlet air pressure, throttle position, crankshaft position, rpm, water temperature and a vehicle down sensor. For 2010, another function has been added: An ignition cut-out will not allow the Teryx to be ridden away when the parking brake is engaged. That new braking system protection complements the Teryx’s CVT Belt Protection System, which, among other good things, automatically retards ignition timing if the system detects engine operation at high rpm for more than two seconds while the rear wheels are motionless (i.e., the belt is slipping), and warns the rider via a flashing belt warning lamp on the dash.

All that electronically enhanced performance is perfectly packaged within an advanced chassis that’s narrow enough to navigate most trails (and fit in a standard pickup bed), yet wide enough to offer a roomy cab and an excellent ride. The wide-track design frame uses large-diameter, thin-walled tubing to combine tremendous rigidity with light weight. The upper frame adds roll-over protection, and there’s enough room inside to fit two full-sized adults in a comfortable but supportive pair of bucket seats with retractable three-point seat belts.

Once comfortably strapped in, the rider can choose 2WD or 4WD with the flip of a switch, and Kawasaki’s super-efficient continuously variable transmission takes it from there, to practically anywhere you feel like going. A cockpit-adjustable variable front differential control even lets you fine-tune front-end traction.

Long-travel four-wheel independent suspension, adjustable Kayaba gas-charged shocks at all four corners, a rear stabilizer bar and mid-ship engine placement all work together to tame tough trails, with a high-performance long A-arm double-wishbone suspension design that reduces camber changes for sharp steering at all times. When it’s time to slow down, dual discs up front and a high-tech sealed oil-bath braking unit out back get the job done with power to spare, while Kawasaki Engine Braking Control uses clever electronics to assist with engine braking on steep downhills. Specially designed 26-inch Maxxis tires designed for the Teryx’s characteristics are the final ingredient in its amazingly potent handling package.

A large selection of authentic Kawasaki Accessories are available through Kawasaki dealers for the 2010 Teryx 750 FI 4x4. As with all off-highway vehicle recreation, Kawasaki encourages RUV drivers to drive responsibly and to respect the environment.

Kawasaki to Present New Teryx to ADF for Camp Host use at Buttercup

Back in 2007, Kawasaki first became aware of the need for on-site transportation for the BLM Camp Host at Buttercup. Discussions with the American Desert Foundation and BLM Imperial Sand Dunes Manager Neil Hamada determined that a side by side vehicle such as a Kawasaki Teryx would accommodate the needs of the Camp Host.

Hamada indicated that the availability of the Teryx will allow BLM to utilize our camp host to patrol the area, make positive visitor contacts, pick up trash, and provide assistance when needed. It will also free up a BLM pick up truck for EMT use to provide medical services in the dunes.

Through the continued efforts of Kawasaki, a brand new Teryx will be available to the BLM on a loan basis. Kawasaki will formally present the Teryx to the ADF who will then loan it to the BLM at the 2009 Dune Tour Spooktacular www.thedunetour.com on October 31, 2009.

The American Desert Foundation is a non-profit corporation, established and organized under Section 501c(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code, which, is dedicated to improving scientific understanding of the ecosystems and human uses that define the desert regions of the United States.

Off-Road Business Association Founder Roy Denner Passes Away

By Jon Crowley

This week the off-road community lost a long-time leader when Roy Denner passed away after a 23-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Roy is survived by his wife Nancy of 52 years. My thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and the rest of the Denner family.

Roy and Nancy were avid motorcycle riders. They taught their son to ride at five years of age and also taught many of his friends and their children to ride in the early 1960’s. Roy’s lessons always included a healthy respect for the environment. The love of the sport continued throughout his life and he worked hard to preserve riding experiences for his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and thousands of off-roaders that he didn’t even know.

Roy became active in land-use in the 1990’s as a member of the San Diego Off-Road Coalition (SDORC), where he was the Director of Land Use for several years. He also served as a member of the California Desert District Advisory Council for many years as well as the ISDRA Technical Review Team. For his hard work and dedication, he was named OHV Volunteer of the Year by the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division in 1999.

After the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was used to close a huge chunk on the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area in 2000, Roy saw the writing on the wall. He knew that off-road businesses needed to band together and form a non-profit trade association that could go on the offensive to stem the tide of closures. From there, the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) was born. Roy worked tirelessly to grow the organization and make it a powerful force not only in the political arena where Roy knew off-roaders must become influential, but also within the land management agencies that carry out the laws and the will of those in office.

Appeasement with environmental extremist wasn't part of Roy's mode of operation and I think that is what I found most refreshing about Roy. He knew all too well that every time off-roaders compromised meant that we lost access to another acre and our way of life would slowly die with each battle. Roy was aggressive at a time when off-roaders needed direction, and we are all indebted to him for pushing us in that direction.

I had the privilege to meet Roy in person back in about 2002 at a political fundraiser in Sacramento. Thanks to the internet, I had read a lot about Roy and when I shook his hand for the first time, I told him that he was my hero. Being a newbie in the world of OHV closures, Roy was bigger than life to me. I had seen how the ESA and Wilderness designations worked as perfect tools for environmental extremists and knew that my favorite sand dune in Nevada would soon be in their sights. I tapped Roy to help with the fight to keep Sand Mountain Recreation Area open, and I know that without his help and guidance, we would have lost a lot more.

Roy was tireless in the fight for the rights of off-roaders, and future generations are indebted to the passion he brought to the table year after year. Roy wasn’t the kind of guy that wanted anyone to fuss over him, and he didn’t care much for memorial services, but he will be missed by many. I thought it would be fitting to have off-roaders tell us about how he made a difference to them.

If you have something you would like to say about Roy, please send an email and/or photos to jon@utvweekly.com.

Rest in peace Roy…

New Studded Snow/Ice From ITP is Just in Time For Winter

ITP TUNDRACROSS IS THE INDUSTRY’S FIRST STUDDED SNOW/ICE TIRE

Leave it to ITP to deliver the ATV/UTV industry’s first production snow and ice tire!

The all-new TundraCross features 96 carbide-tipped steel case studs that are strategically placed for maximum performance on ice and snow. The TundraCross is based on ITP’s highly successful TerraCross R/T XD design, and features fully sipped (thinly cut) lugs, which result in more traction-grabbing edges and maximum traction in loose, slippery conditions.

Its tough 6-ply bias construction is light in weight and offers excellent flotation to keep the tire “on top” of the snow. A proven Rim Guard keeps snow and ice out of the bead area and protects the wheel lip. The TundraCross debuts in two sizes: 25x9-12 (P/N 560544) and 25x10-12 (P/N 560545).

According to Minnesota-based Rox Speed FX, who assisted in the development of this tire, “These carbon studs have no mercy on whatever surface they come in contact with, not only clawing their way through ice and snow but over frozen logs and dirt. With the TundraCross mounted we now welcome the onset of winter and all its changes and challenges. The TundraCross adds one more season of capability to any utility/4x4 ATV or side-by-side UTV, helping to put the ‘all’ in all-terrain.”

Since 1982, ITP has grown into the world's #1 ATV/UTV aftermarket tire and wheel source, and continues to provide a complete line of innovative tires and wheels for virtually all ATVs and UTVs. For a copy of ITP’s full-color product catalog, call toll-free: 1-800-859-4740. For other inquiries or technical advice, contact ITP at 930-A S. Rockefeller Ave., Ontario, CA 91761; (909) 390-1905. U.S. lawmakers conduct hearing that considers banning motorized vehicles from more than 9 million acres in Utah

Source: American Motorcyclist Association

AMA staff was on-site to monitor a U.S. House subcommittee hearing today, Oct. 1, on a measure aimed at banning off-highway motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATV) from one-sixth of the state of Utah.

The Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, chaired by Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), held the hearing to consider H.R. 1925, the America's Red Rock Wilderness Act of 2009. The proposal would close off 9.4 million acres of Utah's public land to motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles, and would even restrict horseback riding. Popular off-highway vehicle riding areas included in the legislation are Moab, the San Rafael Swell and Chimney Rock, among others.

The legislation was first introduced 20 years ago by then-Rep. Wayne Owens (D-Utah). Owens sought a Wilderness designation for 5 million acres. Under a Wilderness designation, no vehicles, including motorcycles, ATVs or even bicycles, are allowed on affected public land.

The latest legislation was introduced by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), who has been introducing similar bills to create Wilderness in Utah since 1994. He has done so over the protest of Utah's congressional delegation and governor, who have fought the proposals, saying that the land Hinchey has proposed for Wilderness doesn't even meet the Wilderness definition because it includes roads and developments. Additionally, they argue, the creation of more Wilderness would hurt local economies.

"We can find a balanced approach to land management that meets the needs of preservation, energy production, recreation and multiple use, but this bill doesn't do that," said Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah), who's shown in the above photo. "This flawed bill is a top-down approach that would arbitrarily lock up huge portions of our state, and it doesn't even fit the definition of Wilderness. Thankfully, it is not supported by a single federally elected official in the state."

"We need to protect public land for the people, not from the people," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "There's absolutely no reason to shut out those who enjoy responsible motorized recreation, including bicyclists, the handicapped who enjoy the outdoors on ATVs, and others. This is simply another land grab pushed by anti-access groups who want to close land access to motorcycle and ATV riders and their families, as well as bicyclists."

Proponents of the Wilderness bill argue that proposed restrictions would be discussed, reviewed and debated in congressional committees, and then the full Congress. But Moreland noted that recent history proves that isn't always the case.

For example, earlier this year, Congress fast-tracked a 1,300-page bill that President Obama then signed into law to designate Wilderness in some 2 million acres in several states nationwide. That legislation, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, was a combination of more than 160 bills, and some lawmakers complained that they had never even seen almost half of them, let alone debated them, nor had time to get constituent input on them.

"There are already mechanisms in place at the local level to manage this public land in the best interests of all users," Moreland said. "There is simply no reason to dismantle that. Decisions about the disposition of lands in Utah should not exclude the residents and representatives who call Utah home."

All riders who want to take action on Wilderness proposals in Congress can contact their federal lawmakers in the Issues & Legislation section of this website.

RJ Anderson Puts His Polaris RZR S on the Podium

Minneapolis, Minn., (10/2/2009) – RJ Anderson had another successful weekend at rounds three and four of the TORC short course series at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris California.

Round three was held Friday September 25 and due to TORC rules, Anderson gridded his RANGER RZR S in last place despite being the fastest qualifier. Halfway through the race, he had worked his was up to third place and with two laps to go he made the pass for the lead.

“My RANGER RZR S was working great and we had new shock valving and an improved clutch set up for the race,” Anderson said. ‘We were just taking it easy until two laps to go and we really went for it, taking the lead and held it to the finish.”

Round four was held the next night at Perris Auto Speedway on September 26. Anderson gridded sixth during the race and again worked his way up to second place. On the last lap he was side by side with the leader and drifted wide and hit the outside wall pretty hard.

“We broke something in the rear of the car and I was happy to just limp the car home for a second place finish,” Anderson said.

With his first and second place finishes RJ Anderson extends his points lead to 88 with just two rounds remaining. Rounds five and six will take place on October 23-24, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Forest Jobs and Recreation Act is Bad for America

By Brian Hawthorne, BlueRibbon Coalition

Jon Tester, a U.S. Senator from Montana, is holding meetings on legislation he calls the "Forest Jobs and Recreation Act." It's a Wilderness bill dressed up as a compromise between preservation, forest health and recreation. The stated purpose of which is:

To sustain the economic development and recreational use of National Forest System land and other public land in the State of Montana, to add certain land to the National Wilderness Preservation System, to release certain wilderness study areas, to designate new areas for recreation, and for other purposes.

That's a fine statement, and I really like the title of the bill. But after careful review of the current draft, I can't see that it does much more than designate a bunch of new Wilderness. It certainly doesn't designate any "new areas for recreation."

What this bill does do, however, is demonstrate just how utterly broken federal land management is these days. As an object lesson, or a demonstration project, I think Tester has created a masterpiece.

Here's why: the jobs in Tester's jobs bill do NOT hinge on the legislation actually opening up lands that are otherwise closed today for logging. Although maps and other "PR" try to make it seem otherwise, the legislation is very clear on this point. Any logging or forest health jobs resulting from this bill are already permitted today, either via an existing Forest Plan or via legislation already passed into law.

The essence of Tester's bill is an attempt to force the Forest Service to follow through with existing plans that allow logging, and also attempts to limit environmental groups' ability to challenge them.

It is no longer a joke to say it takes an act of Congress to cut timber in Montana.

I don't know if I could have created a better example of how gridlocked the agency is in management, or how these "environmental" groups sue at the drop of a hat. That it requires legislation to log a paltry 70 thousand acres over 10 years is a sad indication of how broken our system of public lands management is.

To make matters worse, its not clear the bill will succeed even if passed. Fred Hodgeboom, President, Montanan's for Multiple Use, and former Forest Service Planning Forester, doesn't think the legislation will result in much timber cut. Hodgeboom said; "Timber harvest targets authorized by the existing Forest Plan have been blocked by endless appeals and litigation. As the Bill is written, agency gridlock and environmental lawsuits will prevail in attempts to implement the timber targets proposed in Tester's bill."

In the meantime, the Forests, after years of non-management (what I call benign neglect) are growing even more susceptible to "fatal" wildfires, disease and insect devastation. What a mess.

What About Recreation?

Far from designating "new" recreation areas, or even sustaining recreational uses at existing levels, this bill eliminates a lot of existing recreation opportunity.

Most of the lands in Tester's bill are on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest (B-DNF), and the bill essentially establishes in law what the new Forest Plan dictates. Sadly, the new plans dictate that many prized snowmobile areas and OHV routes be closed.

That's why the Forest Plan is being appealed by numerous stakeholders, including local governments and recreation groups. Should the administrative appeals be denied (likely), some are planning to challenge the new plans in federal court. If Tester's bill passes, that won't be possible.

In an apparent sop to the over 28% of Montana residents who enjoy OHV and snowmobile use, Tester is going to establish several National Recreation Areas (NRA) where motorized and mountain bike recreation will be, um, 'emphasized.'

The draft bill contains very specific language on where OHVs and snowmobiles are allowed in these areas. Unfortunately, the language is impossible to decipher. Either that, or the language has been specifically designed to eliminate our use.

The bill establishes three NRAs within the B-DNF. In the West Big Hole NRA, motors are allowed only on "approved, designated routes." In the West Pioneers NRA, motors are allowed only on "approved, designated trails and routes in existence as of the date of enactment of this Act." In the Thunderbolt Creek NRA, motors are allowed on "established trails and routes existing as of the date of enactment of this Act."

Now, the different language for the different NRAs is confusing enough, but the B-DNF has not yet completed its travel plan, and until it does, very few routes can be accurately described as approved OR designated, let alone approved AND designated. And as far as I'm aware, there is no regulatory definition of "established routes."

As written, it is simply impossible to tell what the bill will do with the existing routes in the NRAs. OHV users have met with Tester's staff and have been assured it's not the Senator's intent to eliminate OHV use, and they are open to changes in the bill. Let's hope they are open to correcting obvious errors.

What is really interesting is what the bill says about mountain bikes. While the bill at least seems specific on motors, it simply states, "The use of mechanized, non-motorized vehicles shall be permitted." I guess I'll have to be the one to ask: Permitted where, exactly? Are mountain bikes allowed to go anywhere they want? Or just on existing trails? Designated trails?

Some of our mountain bikers might think that sort of vague language is a good thing, and it certainly seems better than the motorized verbiage. But I don't trust it. Sooner or later, someone is going to define that vague language. And if that someone ends up being a federal judge, well, let's just say that if I was the head of the mountain biker group in Montana, I'd be meeting with Tester to nail our trails down in concrete.

What about the Wilderness?

The bill designates approximately 677,000 acres of Wilderness, but it releases 76,000 acres of Wilderness Study Area into "multiple use management." I guess we're supposed to be really happy about that. But something in the back of my head tells me we'll never see much in the way of OHV or snowmobile recreation there. I hope I'm wrong.

I can't refrain from making a comment about how Tester's bill treats Wilderness. In the Proposed East Pioneers Wilderness, for example, Tester makes certain that "motorized use over and along roads and trails in existence as of the date of enactment of this Act" is allowed for maintenance of several water impoundment structures (reservoirs). The bill also allows motorized use within Wilderness to maintain various pipelines and communication sites.

Say what?? Roads? Reservoirs? Pipelines? Communication sites? In Wilderness? This can't be. I mean, Congress prohibited such things when they passed the original 1964 Wilderness Act, didn't they?

Again, this bill is an excellent object lesson on just how broken our system of public lands has become. The Wilderness Act does not even remotely contemplate any of this occurring in Wilderness. But then again, the Wilderness Act never contemplated Wilderness in areas crisscrossed with roads, pipelines and communication sites. What a mess.

Back to the drawing board.

Any legislation that purports to be a compromise must include benefits for all parties. This bill is far from a true compromise because it rewards Wilderness groups for being litigious and punishes average forest visitors with closures. It absolutely guarantees the Wilderness will be established the very second it's signed into law, but provides few guarantees that those 70 thousand acres will be cut or that trails will be left open.

This is Tester's first stab at a land bill, so I'm going to cut him some slack. But he needs to go back to the drawing board. Until he does, this bill should be considered a non-starter.

I strongly encourage the Senator to work with recreational groups to find those mutual benefits. If it is his intent to protect OHV and snowmobile recreation in certain areas, then his legislation should say so. Clearly and unambiguously. We support National Recreation Areas, and we applaud Tester for considering this option. But the legislation should protect existing OHV, mountain bike and snowmobile recreation. There may be some areas suitable for Wilderness, but boundaries should be carefully re-drawn to leave out existing recreation destinations. And I think he would be wise to use his legislation as a way to address problems local communities have with these new forest plans, as opposed to "sealing the deal" on what the agency cooked up.

Senator Tester is taking public input on his bill, and we encourage you to make your views known, but not just to the Senator. Start at the county and work your way up. You can find contact numbers, as well as updates and other info, on our new dedicated webpage for Tester's bill. It's all on www.sharetrails.org/public_lands - your best online resource for recreational access.
