Weller Racing responds to Kimbrell’s DQ at LOORRS Round 6

June 29, 2009 - Chandler, AZ
It is with great trepidation and concern that we find ourselves forced to deal with an issue that we never felt we would be faced with in our racing career, and as a result of the decision of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS) tech officials to disqualify Austin Kimbrell based on his Weller Racing motor exceeding the 800cc limit for the Unlimited UTV class, we are now forced to look within our own processes to try to find what went wrong – not only in an effort to ensure that we never find ourselves in this situation again, but also to ensure that our current and future customers will forever retain the trust they have put into us throughout the years.
Racing is our way of life, and nothing fulfills us more than being able to go to battle with truly great competitors; and the only way this can BE truly fulfilling, is if that competition is always fair. Because of this belief, we want to express our agreement and full support of LOORRS’ decision to tear down the top three motors in the Unlimited UTV class. We feel that this is necessary, and will keep everyone honest, while also helping to dispel any rumors of other teams cheating. We have felt this should be done for a very long time, and are happy to see it finally happening now.
We also understand how it must look to anyone who is not in the motor building business to see that a racer is disqualified due to exceeding a set cc limit. We were rocked to the core when we were informed by LOORRS tech officials that Kimbrell’s motor was found to be 1.4 cc’s over the 800cc limit. This discrepancy was found on the front cylinder, and it is practically immeasurable. This was evident by the fact that even the LOORRS tech’s testing mechanism had to be rechecked 5 times, because they were getting readings varying over 2mm difference. While we are not fully convinced with whom the discrepancy actually lies, we will side with LOORRS, and will build the necessary cushion in the future to account for this variation. We understand that rules are rules, and must be enforced – after all, it just makes for better racing.
Again, we want to stress that we are competitors to the core, but we are only satisfied by a truly fair competition. We support LOORRS and their decision, and will make any and all necessary adjustments to our build processes to ensure that this will never be an issue again. We also support our racers, and we know that Austin Kimbrell drove his heart out, and will be on the podium again shortly with a motor that is undeniably within the regulatory limits.
Thank you to all of our loyal customers, our friends, our race families and our fans for your support throughout the years. We are still a young company, and we are learning as we grow – we are not immune to mistakes, and we can only hope that as we strive to minimize those mistakes, that the faith you all have in our business, our character, and our intentions stays true.

Sincerely,
Jason and Corry Weller – Weller Racing, LLC

Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series - June 27, 28 UTV

Round 5 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series from the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Complex in Lake Elsinore, CA

At the beginning of the UTV race, it was the Walker Evans Racing Wheels Polaris of RJ Anderson who took the early lead. Close behind was Robert Vanbeekum, followed by Austin Kimbrell and Tyler Winbury. All four had opened a big gap on the rest of the field, and the only other driver really moving was the #624 Funco Kawasaki of Chad George, who was picking of drivers left and right after starting dead last thanks to his mechanical woes in yesterday’s qualifying session. Up front, Kimbrell moved into second as the rest of the field started to string out. The competition yellow brought the drivers all back together, and after green was shown again, the pressure of leading finally seemed to get to young RJ Anderson, who was passed by Kimbrell, then Vanbeekum, then Winbury and George when Anderson spun out near turn 2. Up front, #607 Kimbrell checked out, leaving the real action to the last lap battle between Funco teammates Winbury and George for the final step on the podium. These two passed each other several times, but it was George who was ahead of his teammate when it counted, as he ultimately took third behind Kimbrell and Vanbeekum. Fourth was Winbury, and Anderson managed to hold together well enough to pick up a fifth place finish.

Results for the UTV class are:

1. 607 Austin Kimbrell
2. 624 Chad George
3. 637 RJ Anderson

Yamaha Launches www.TruthAboutRhino.com

New Site is Resource for Accurate Information; Encourages Enthusiast and Industry Support

CYPRESS, Calif. – June 24, 2009 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., has launched www.TruthAboutRhino.com. The new Web site has been created to provide accurate information about Yamaha and its Rhino Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles, to combat a recent flurry of inaccurate information and negative advertisements targeting the vehicle, and to encourage Rhino customers and the off-road industry to show their support for the SxS segment.

From the original 2004 Rhino 660 introduction to present day, TruthAboutRhino.com documents key points in the history of the vehicle. Some sections of the site offer Yamaha’s safety recommendations and product specifications, while others highlight the many awards and accolades that the Rhino has received. Visitors to the site can find Yamaha history and general corporate background, and Rhino customers and enthusiasts can “Rally Around the Rhino” by filling out an online form or emailing messages or questions to: info@truthaboutrhino.com.

“With TruthAboutRhino.com, Yamaha has created a home for accurate information about our company and the Rhino product line, and we’re encouraging our customers and the industry to show their support,” said Steve Nessl, Marketing Manager for Yamaha’s ATV & SxS Group. “We’ve seen a disproportionate amount of negative and inaccurate information distributed recently, so we wanted to create a place where our customers, the general public and the news media can get the real facts.”

The new Web site includes background information on Yamaha and the Rhino, details on the March 31, 2009, Consumer Product Safety Commission repair program announcement (which has been inaccurately described as a recall), and provides a platform for Rhino fans and off-road enthusiasts in general to show their support.

“What has been lost in the firestorm of negative, inaccurate information about the Rhino is that the vast majority of our customers and SxS enthusiasts absolutely love their vehicles and its role in pioneering the SxS segment in the industry,” Nessl said. “In reality, statistics show that more than 99 percent of Rhino customers have never reported any claim or incident, a fact never mentioned in the plaintiff attorney ads or Web sites where they troll for new clients. We decided it was time to create a home online for ourselves where accurate information about our vehicle can be found.”

Yamaha’s Rhino safety recommendations and guidelines, which are posted on TruthAboutRhino.com, include:
· Drivers must be 16 years or older and have a valid motor vehicle license. Children under 16 should never drive a Rhino.
· To ride in a Rhino, a passenger must be tall enough to place both feet flat on the floorboard with his or her back against the seat back and be able to reach the passenger hand holds.
· Driver and passenger should always wear seatbelts and protective gear/clothing including: Helmet, Eye protection, Gloves, Over-the-ankle boots, Long sleeves and Long pants.
· Drivers and passengers should stay completely inside the vehicle at all times.
· Rhinos are designed for off-road use only. They should never be operated on public roads or paved surfaces.
· As with any motor vehicle, safety features are no substitute for driving responsibly. Avoid aggressive or reckless use of the Rhino.
· For more safety recommendations, please check out the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association web site at: www.ROHVA.org .

Some customer and fan feedback is also already posted on the site, including a video compilation from the most recent Rhino Rally in Glamis. Yamaha plans to update the site on a regular basis with more news, fun events, photos, videos and comments from the public.

“Rhino customers are our biggest supporters and the most enthusiastic about SxS vehicles and Yamaha,” Nessl said. “We look forward to their feedback on the TruthAboutRhino.”

DragonFire Racing Aligns with Roeseler and Team Green

Kawasaki Teryx - DragonFire Racing
DragonFire Racing, multi-time Baja Champion Larry Roeseler and Team Green Kawasaki will be at Rounds 5 and 6 this weekend in the Lucas Oil Offroad Series. As the Side-by-Side industry grows, it grows attention. Attention is coming from new sponsors, manufacturers, and drivers. Short course racing has brought a lot of attention to the Side By Side market, and the close racing amongst manufacturers and drivers continues to bring new and talented people into the sport. Larry Roeseler not only brings talent and positive attention to our sport but a personality that is approachable and a fan base that stretches many generations. Larry is a recognized motorcycle racer with ten overall wins in the Baja 1000, nine overalls at the Baja 500, ten I.S.D.E. Gold Medals and has been inducted into the American Motorcycle Association's Hall of Fame. Not stopping in his two-wheel winning ways, Larry took to four wheels in 1995 and has since added three more Baja 1000 overalls and also two more Baja 500s, not to mention numerous championships and class wins along the way. Larry has been a Kawasaki Team Green Rider for 18 years, and continues to be a spokesman for the company. His ability to not only improve a vehicle but to continue its development is what makes this new racing team so exciting. DragonFire Racing has spent the last six months designing this car for Larry, and has made it the most advanced race car on the track. "I am a very lucky man, being involved in so many different projects over the years, and now this with DragonFire Racing-I'm very excited," said Roeseler. "I can't wait for everyone to see this car and team at the LOORS races. It'll turn some heads, and trust me, we'll win some races." The Teryx Larry will be driving will set a standard for the Side by Side industry and will only help to grow and improve the products that we see available at the manufacturer and aftermarket accessory levels. The DragonFire Team Green Teryx has specifically designed to allow the suspension to provide over 17 inches of wheel travel but still meet the width requirement set forth in the LOORS rules. To handle the 120 horsepower developed by the DFR Teryx motor, the car will have 14-inch ITP tires on all four corners. Type 1 rear axles and CVs with inboard hubs and disc brakes were developed to accommodate the horsepower and CV angle. Developments in the steering system include new front steer spindles, custom racks, quick steer and a steering damper. All-new A-arms were designed, with 24-inch Fox shocks mounted to the lower arms both front and rear, keeping the roll center of the car as low as possible. Fox designed all-new shocks with 8-inch remote reservoirs for increased cooling capacity, as well as larger-diameter shock bodies and shock shafts to enhance the increased travel. A hanging racing billet brake pedal with a remote reservoir was developed to provide more space in the driving compartment. Race Pack created a digital dash that displays RPM, speed, water and oil temperatures and oil pressure, as well as shock temperature, allowing the driver to manage all the key functions of the vehicle. All these products and more will make it to market and be available for the weekend racer or warrior. It is products like these that will put DragonFire Racing and Kawasaki on the podium and on your car.

DRAGONFIRE RACING RIDES ITP BAJACROSS TO BAJA 500 VICTORY

The 2009 SCORE Baja 500 was a breakthrough event for both DragonFire Racing and the new ITP BajaCross tire. A DragonFire-backed and -built Factory Team Green Kawasaki Teryx was driven by Reid Nordin and Hans Waage to a decisive win in the Sportsman UTV class. It was a flawless day by Baja 500 standards, with only one mechanical repair required: a broken rear upright cost the team about three hours of down time. But the speed of the DragonFire Teryx — and the performance and reliability of its ITP BajaCross tires (mounted on ITP T-7 Beadlock wheels) — enabled the team to put a big enough lead on the field to make up the lost ground and still win by an hour. They completed the course in a time of 18:23:42 and an average speed of 23.51 mph.

DragonFire Racing’s Todd Romano gives abundant thanks to the support offered by friends, family, fans and chase crews, as well as sponsors Team Green Kawasaki, Fox Racing Shox, ITP, Gear One and Redline Webber.
The ITP BajaCross is capable of results like this due to an 8-ply rating and 25% stronger construction, resulting in a high level of durability. Its extended-life rubber compound and innovative overlapping tread pattern provides a smooth, predictable ride as well as slow wear characteristics — this is the highest-mileage tire ITP has ever produced! Stepped lugs provide consistent tread edges as the tire wears, for predictable performance throughout the long life of the tire. Wraparound lugs provide improved shoulder protection, while a super deep Rim Guard feature offers the best wheel lip protection in the business. Despite its strength, the BajaCross’s advanced carcass design delivers the most comfortable, trail-compliant ride available.
The ITP BajaCross is now available in four sizes: 25x8R-12, 25x10R-12, 26x10R-14 and 26x11R-14.

DRAGONFIRE RACING KAWASAKI TERYX™ WINS BIG AT BAJA 500

Irvine, Calif. – The Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx won its first ever Baja 500 in the Sportman UTV class by an outstanding margin, putting the Kawasaki Teryx in a league of its own. The RUV (Recreational Utility Vehicle) was piloted by Kawasaki’s own Team Green Manager Reid Nordin and Hans Waage in great weather conditions for the single day event. The two drivers took advantage of the Teryx’s V-Twin engine to finish hours ahead of the next finisher.
Kawasaki Under the Tent
Late Start
At the start of the race, the Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx was lined up third in the segmented start. During the mandatory safety check, the team was required to adjust the extra safety lights on the Teryx and ended up starting 10 minutes behind the next car while making the necessary adjustments. The deficit didn’t last long as Nordin piloted the RUV to the front of the class by race mile 78.
“It didn’t take long to catch up to the other cars,” said Nordin. “We were able to run a really fast pace thanks to a great chassis and an awesome motor.”
Take What Baja Throws At You
Cruising with a two hour lead over the class competitors, Nordin was just over 25 miles from the teams scheduled pit stop location when he had to pull over for repairs. By the time the chase truck was flagged down, parts fixed and back on track, the team lost almost three hours. Only one competitor passed the team in that time span. After switching drivers, Waage piloted the Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx to the lead at race mile 260 and never looked back.
“Baja is one of those places that will throw anything at you,” said Nordin. “In my many years of experience with this race, there is always a chance to break and a chance to come from behind. I think that the Baja race is the most challenging event because of that factor.”
Winning Experience
Starting his visits to Baja during the 1970s, Nordin brought decades of experience to the new team. After all those years, this was only his second time actually racing the event with his previous experience on a three-wheeler in the 1980s. Most of Nordin’s Baja experiences have been helping lead the Kawasaki off-road team to numerous victories in the late 80s and early 90s.“
I just love Baja and I do whatever I can to get down for the 500 and 1000 races,” said Nordin. “I’m glad I was able to help the Dragonfire team to their first victory.”
A Proven Winner
The Dragonfire Racing Kawasaki Teryx raced in the 2008 Baja 1000 and the team used that time as a learning experience for future races. The two companies, Dragonfire and Kawasaki, put their heads together so the next event, the Baja 500, was a complete success.
“Dragonfire Racing has worked with others before and the cooperation we’ve had with Kawasaki has developed into a great partnership,” said Todd Romano, Dragonfire Racing Owner. “We pre-ran the course for over 1000 miles (with temperatures in the lower 100s) in a Teryx that was similar to the race vehicle and we didn’t need to change the oil or air filter.”

Is the Yamaha Rhino destined to go the way of the Honda ATC?

Commentary by Jon Crowley, www.utvguide.net
June 1, 2009

I was interviewed las week by a freelance reporter who is writing an article on the Yamaha Rhino and I got to thinking about the future of sport UTVs. Are Yamaha Rhinos, as well as other sport UTVs headed in the direction of the infamous Honda ATC three-wheeler from back in the 1980’s?

If you remember way back when in 1982 (it really wasn’t that long ago), Honda introduced the ATC 200 Big Red. The ATC was a great machine, but as popularity exploded, so did the accident rate.

Honda ATV Three Wheeler circa 1983 1983 Honda ATC Three Wheeler

The increase in accident levels lead to an investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In 1986, CPSC statistics suggested that most accidents were due to improper rider behavior that ignored manufacturer warnings. No inherent flaw was found in the three-wheel design.

Honda’s owner’s manual and product warning labels stressed the importance of proper operation to its customers. Through a national industry safety campaign, there was a 33 percent decline in recorded CPSC injury statistics between 1984 and 1988.
Nevertheless, in 1988, ATV manufacturers entered into a 10 year agreement with the CPSC. Under the agreement ATV manufacturers made a $100 million commitment to expand safety programs. Additionally, even though three-wheel ATC sales were dropping off, manufacturers agreed to stop distributing ATCs in the U.S.
If history is bound to repeat itself, the sport UTV is headed in a similar direction as the ATC three-wheeler. The Yamaha Rhino is currently the biggest target, and Yamaha has worked out an agreement with the CPSC to “repair” existing Rhinos. Yamaha is facing an onslaught of lawsuits from users that for the most part have tipped their vehicles over and have been injured or killed.
From what I have seen in reviewing many of the accidents, a lot can be blamed on users not following manufacturer guidelines for proper use. For example, here are the two most recent accidents that happened in May 2009:

The accidents are tragic, that is for sure. But if you look past the typical inflammatory reporting that blame the machine, you will find that in both instances, many guidelines were completely ignored that would have either prevented the accident or surely lessened the severity.
In the case of the 13 year old boy, he was not wearing a seat belt, he was under 16 years old, the Rhino was new (lack of experience), he was not wearing a helmet and there was no adult supervision.

With the father that died in the roll over, the Rhino was carrying one driver and 5 children as passengers in a two person vehicle. No one had seat belts on, and the father was carrying his one year old son on his lap.

If I am reading the tea-leaves correctly, I can see that improper use of sport UTVs will soon affect the types of vehicles that manufactures are allowed to build. Will the CPSC step in and limit how powerful side x side vehicles can be? Will helmets become mandatory equipment just like they are in California for ATVs? Will manufacturers be forced to add even more safety equipment? A riding lawn mower with doors, window nets and roll cages that create a safety bubble around occupants isn't too far fatched if you get where I am going here.

Even though the vast majority of side x side vehicle owners use their vehicles without incident, all of these lawsuits, the bureaucrats at the CPSC and our efficient lawmakers are going to force manufacturers to limit how much fun we can have in our beloved UTVs. That is the sad truth.

There are many more accidents involving bicycles per capita than there are in UTVs. If you apply the same logic to bicycles, manufacturers would have been forced to include a protective bubble around all bikes sold in the U.S. many years ago. But there are a few critical difference between bicycles and UTVs. First off, people have long ago accepted the fact that you may fall off your bicycle. And secondly, there isn't a specific manufacturer (aka cash cow) for a class action lawsuit so the lawfirms aren't interested.

Just because you have an accident and then see an advertisement on the TV or on the internet from a lawfirm talking about accidents in a Rhino doesn’t mean there is a problem with the vehicle.
###
Here are a few guidelines to remember to help keep you safe in a side x side vehicle:
  • Always wear your seat belt
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Keep arms and legs in the vehicle at all times
  • Abrupt maneuvers or aggressive driving can cause rollovers – even on flat, open areas
  • Children under 16 should never drive a side x side vehicle

Beyond following the guideline provided by vehicle manufacturers, use some common sense and take responsibility for your actions. Be sure to learn the limits of your vehicle and your driving ability.

U.S. Special Forces Choose Kawasaki Teryx

Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI4 x4Kawasaki Teryx™ Recreation Utility Vehicle Selected In SOCOM Tactical Vehicle Competition

More Than 1,600 Teryx RUVs Included in $28.3 Million Order

The United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has been searching for a tough, agile, tactical vehicle. From run of the mill utility vehicles all the way up to mega-dollar custom fabricated equipment, there was no shortage of contenders for the job. Following extensive research and numerous evaluation sessions, they decided to go with Kawasaki’s 2009 Teryx™ Recreation Utility Vehicle (RUV).
Following extensive research and numerous evaluation sessions, SOCOM decided to go with Kawasaki’s Teryx™ Recreation Utility VehicleAfter providing units to the military in June of 2008, Shannon Tracy, owner of UV Country Kawasaki a Veteran woman owned small business located in Houston, Tex., immediately recognized the Teryx’s excellent chance of winning any military competition where toughness, light weight, speed and agility were a factor.
In January, she replied to a new SOCOM bid request, with a proposal for UV Country to provide a large quantity of Kawasaki Teryx RUVs over a multi-year period.
Tracy’s efforts paid off, quite handsomely. After the final round of evaluations, SOCOM chose the 2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 RUV, awarding the contract, worth up to $28,390,453 to UV Country. UV Country is now scheduled to deliver up to 1,625 units on a five year indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract.
“We’ve fulfilled several smaller GSA and Texas state contracts in the past, but this new Special Forces project is our largest contract by far.” says Tracy. “It provides a great boost to our business, lends extra credibility to the Teryx and assists all Kawasaki dealers by capitalizing on its outstanding performance. If it’s good enough for the SOCOM environment, then it must be capable of handling whatever American hunters and outdoor enthusiasts can throw at it. This is a real win-win situation for everyone,” concluded Tracy.
Powered by a fuel-injected 750cc V-twin engine, Kawasaki’s popular Teryx 750 FI 4x4 RUV offers side-by-side seating for two adults, a roll over protective structure (ROPS), front discs and a special sealed rear brake, four wheel independent suspension, a tilting cargo bed with 500 pounds of carrying capacity and the ability to tow up to 1,300 pounds.

Yamaha Announces Ag-Comm Scholarship Winners

Yamaha Motors
University of Florida Chapter and Two Purdue Students Receive Inaugural Yamaha Awards

CYPRESS, Calif. – June 3, 2009 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., has named the recipients of its inaugural Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program. The University of Florida Chapter of the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) will receive the chapter award, and Whitney Siegfried and Katherine Kuykendall, both ACT members from Purdue University, earned the individual scholarships. As recipients of the individual scholarships, both Siegfried and Kuykendall will also have the opportunity to serve as interns for Yamaha during the 2009 Ag Media Summit.

Yamaha’s new scholarship program was launched this year to provide financial assistance to members of the ACT, a national college student association with 354 registered members located on 17 college and university campuses across the country. ACT’s mission of fostering professional development is at the core of the new Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program.

As part of the application process, students were asked to incorporate important ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) safety messages into practical communications pieces such as a feature story, brochure or press release. This part of the application was meant to show an example of the students’ quality of work, and also to seed safety messages that they can carry throughout their careers as professional communicators.

“Yamaha congratulates each of the recipients of our 2009 Yamaha-ACT Scholarship program, and we are proud to assist them in their pursuit of a career in agricultural communications,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV and SxS group marketing manager. “We hope that our application process allowed these ACT students to learn new lessons about safe, responsible off-road vehicle use. This is valuable information they can use throughout the professional and personal lives.”

“ACT is about providing students with practical opportunities to grow as future professional communicators, and Yamaha’s scholarship program fits right in with that purpose. To win, the students have to apply their communications skills—writing, design, and public relations. This year’s winners really showed some skill and talent, ” said Jeff Miller, professor of agricultural communications at the University of Arkansas and national adviser of ACT.

The Yamaha-ACT Scholarship Program is broken out into two individual student scholarships and one chapter scholarship. All three scholarships are aimed at helping students attend the annual Agricultural Media Summit (AMS). As the largest gathering of crop and livestock media professionals in the country hosted by the Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) and the Livestock Publications Council (LPC), the AMS is the ACT’s primary career development networking opportunity for these students each year.

Applicants were judged based on merit, need and quality of submission materials by a review committee consisting of Yamaha employees; ACT faculty adviser and Associate Professor for Agricultural Communications at the University of Arkansas, Dr. Jefferson D. Miller; AAEA President Elect and Director of Communications at Iowa Soybean Association, Karen Simon; and Livestock Publications Council President and Senior Director at The American Quarter Horse Journal, Jim Bret Campbell.

New Twin Plate Shock Braces for the Polaris RZR

Thunderhawk Performance has developed this twin-plate rear shock brace in response to the demands of our more extreme customers. Fast trail riding over rough terrain and jumping can bend the stock rear shock mounting tabs. Even stock RZR’s are prone to damaging their rear shock mounts when ridden hard. Polaris has increased the thickness of this area of the frame on 2009 models in an attempt to fix this, but we still have customers with 2009’s bending their shock mounts. The Thunderhawk twin-plate rear shock brace kit will eliminate this problem on all RZR’s.

This Thunderhawk kit includes our PQ3312 rear upper shock mount brace which mounts to the rear of the factory shock mounts and ties the Polaris RZR rear frame cross-tube and upper suspension mounting points together. This part is designed to eliminate the chassis twist caused by rear suspension loads. This twin-plate kit also includes a second heavy-duty brace for the front-side of the RZR rear shock mount to sandwich the factory frame and resist the bending that occurs from hard riding and jumping.

ATR Polaris RZR Solid Shift Kit

Polaris RZR Solid Shift Kit - includes CNC machined shift handle, preload washer and bronze bushings that replace the factory plastic bushings and take out all of the loose play in the factory shift lever. Unlike other shift handles on the market the ATR handle is keyed so that it will not spin loose. It bolts in like the factory shifter from the top and the machined cap is held on with a set screw. This is a much better design instead of expecting one set screw to keep the handle from spinning.
