Polaris Ranger used in Botched Attempt to Smuggle Drugs

Polaris Ranger

Monday, December 22, 2008
Yuma, Ariz. - Yuma Sector agents arrested drug smugglers posing as off-road enthusiasts, Sunday afternoon.About 3 p.m., Border Patrol agents patrolling the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area noticed two individuals on the Mexican side of the international boundary fence scouting out the immediate area. Later agents observed a Polaris Ranger off-road vehicle, on the U.S. side of the fence, drive to meet up with the two scouts. The scouts threw four bundles of marijuana over the fence to the driver of the vehicle; the driver placed the bundles into the back of the Polaris Ranger.
Agents maintained constant surveillance of the vehicle as it drove north to the Midway Campground and stopped at a motor home parked at the campsite. The driver exited the vehicle, entered the motor home briefly, then exited and resumed driving the Polaris Ranger – at this point Border Patrol agents stopped the driver, arrested him and seized the marijuana.
Border Patrol agents and a detection K-9 searched the motor home for other illicit narcotics but were unable to locate any. Agents discovered a male and female occupant with extensive criminal history involving narcotics in the motor home; Jonathan Berry and Jeannine Landreneaux. Landreneaux’s records checks also revealed an active warrant for her arrest for narcotics originating from California. The driver of the vehicle, Russell Carter, also had extensive criminal history involving narcotics. The marijuana weighed 93 pounds with an estimated value of $74,000 and was turned over to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office. Carter and Landreneaux were taken into custody by ICSO. The Polaris Ranger was seized by ICSO.The general public is reminded to observe a 100-foot enforcement zone from the international boundary fence in order to avoid hazardous and sometimes violent illegal cross-border activity, and to allow to Border Patrol to conduct operations within the area.U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

Off-road shop bucks manufacturing trends

By JUDITH B. DOWNING
Contributing Writer

While manufacturers in the Inland Empire report a dim outlook for business as they feel the effects of the slumping economy, one custom off-road business in Corona has seen its business grow 10 percent to 20 percent a month since it opened nine months ago.

"Business may be way down in general from two years ago, but we're not seeing it," said Javier Padilla, co-owner of No Limitz Motorsports.

Dune buggies, or sand rails, and side-by-sides are popular vehicles for desert enthusiasts. The sport is competitive and flashy. Many owners customize and personalize their vehicles and show them off at rallies and gatherings.

Sand rails typically start at $13,000 to $55,000 for the chassis. Making them fully functional adds another $32,000 to $75,000, depending on the options, which can include suspension, lights, cages, wheels and seats.

Side-by-sides -- so named because they come with two seats side by side -- were introduced in fall 2003 and have become wildly popular. Models include the Polaris Ranger, Yamaha Rhino and Honda Big Red.

Since March, No Limitz has customized five Polaris Razor side-by-sides for a customer in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Upon completion they are shipped directly to Dubai for resale. In this case, the client purchased each side-by-side for $10,200 from a California dealer and turned them over to No Limitz Motorsports to have them customized for an additional $20,000 to $25,000 each.

The Dubai connection is leading to additional opportunities, Padilla said. He is considering offering fully packaged Dubai tours for off-road enthusiasts. The tours will feature fully loaded side-by-sides provided by No Limitz. They will be waiting for clients on their arrival.

"Being diversified has really helped our business," Padilla said. "The desert market has been active recently. We're getting a lot of work there."

People buy their basic side-by-side for about $10,000 to $12,000, Padilla said. "Then they come to No Limitz and spend an average of $7,000 on custom work."

No Limitz converts side-by-sides from two to four seats, adds cup holders and stereos, upgrades the suspension, and maintains the vehicles.

Paramedics prepped for off-road response with Polaris Ranger

Paramedics prepped for off-road response

MATTHEW GAUK The Prince Albert Daily Herald

A tracked, enclosed Polaris Ranger painted Parkland Ambulance black and white is "badass," according to one paramedic.
"It can go through a lot more than I though it could," said Curtis Rhinas, a new primary care paramedic at Parkland who took the off-road beast for a rumbling, snow-spitting spin around an empty field behind Parkland's 13th Street East detachment on Friday.
The all-terrain vehicle was purchased with sponsor support in May. Over summer, it was used three or four times at busy public events and for sending help to hard-to-reach locations.
A girl riding her bike at Little Red River Park this summer injured herself and needed to be taken out, but there was no way they could get an ambulance down the trail she was on, Parkland Ambulance spokesman Lyle Karasiuk explained. The Ranger was "perfect" for the job and got her out to the road.
"The staff are very excited about it, it's very useful for them ... if you try to do a rescue on a snow-machine, you can't sit with the patient and talk with them and reassure them, and if something changes in their condition and they start vomiting you wouldn't even know it," he said, adding that the enclosure will keep patients relatively warm during the ride.
Some of the Ranger's uses could include picking up injured skiers and snowmobilers or rescuing stranded hunters.

Save Johnson Valley Fun Ride a Huge Success

3000 PLUS PEOPLE ATTENDED AND 300 HAND-WRITTEN SCOPING LETTERS WERE COLLECTED

THE TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA MARINE CORPS BASE IS PROPOSING AN EXPANSION THAT COULD INCLUDE THE JOHNSON VALLEY OHV AREA. JOHNSON VALLEY IS THE LARGEST OPEN AREA IN THE COUNTRY, LOCATED JUST EAST OF LOS ANGELES, AND IS A MECCA FOR OFF-ROAD RECREATION INCLUDING MANY EVENTS LIKE OFF-ROAD RACING AND COMPETITIVE ROCK CRAWLING.BAKERSFIELD, CA

(December 16, 2008) BRP/Billet Racing Products, Inc and American Motorcyclist Association, District 37 (AMA D37) teamed up this weekend to put on the "Save Johnson Valley Fun Ride." The ride was held at Cougar Buttes in the Johnson Valley OHV Area. An estimated 3000 plus people attended the event. The fantastic turnout was a testament to how important this area is to the entire OHV community.

The main goal of the event was to raise awareness about this issue. It is very important that the OHV community, as a whole, be involved in the public process the Marines are going through in their expansion efforts. The public has three opportunities to shape the outcome of this expansion effort. We can make specific scoping comments, respond to the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIS) and lastly respond to the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). Both the Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) and AMA D37 will have template letters available for their members and the general public to use on their websites throughout this process. "Giving the OHV community the education and tools to be a part of this process is the goal of both ORBA and AMA D37. We believe getting end users involved is very important in this fight" stated Jerry Grabow, AMA D37 Off-Road President. AMA D37 has also launched a new website, www.savejv.com, and all of the template letters will be available on that website as well. We encourage everyone that wants to see continued public recreation in Johnson Valley to visit the website and send their own personalized letter.

Besides raising awareness about the issue, another goal of this event was to unite the entire off-road community while at the same time providing a weekend of fun for the entire family. There were things to do for every type and skill level of off-roader. We had a kid's track, several motorcycle loops, an ATV/UTV loop and two 4 wheel drive runs. Other attractions offered at the event were a rock crawling demo and trials riding demo. Jim Rios, President of BRP stated "I am very proud of how this event brought together all aspects of the off-road community. Together we are a much stronger force."

Just a few of the exciting things that happened in the UTV market during the last year include: Kawasaki’s introduction of the 2008 Teryx and 2009 Teryx Sport; Polaris was first to the market with factory long travel on their RZR S; and Arctic Cat set the bar high for power hungry sport users with their new Prowler 1000 XTZ.

UTVGuide.net was thrilled to be invited to the 2009 Arctic Cat 1000 XTZ press intro and the 2009 Kawasaki Teryx Sport press intro during 2008, and we look forward to participating in many more UTV model intros next year.

Highlights for the year at UTVGuide.net include being chosen as a test driver for Side x Side Action Magazine’s 1st UTV Shootout, and their Kawasaki Battle of the Builders. And few incredible UTV trips rounded out 2008. In May, we traveled south of the border to Baja with Off-Road Warehouse and Side x Side Action Magazine for the 1st Annual Mexico UTV run. And in October we made a trip to the Grand Canyon that won’t soon be forgotten with Side x Side Outfitterz.

Our UTV stable includes two project vehicles, a 2008 Polaris RZR and a 2008 Kawasaki Teryx. Both UTVs have been extensively featured in Side x Side Action Magazine and we are blessed to work with so many great companies that helped us on the projects. Over the next month, the number of UTVs in our stable will more than double with a new Kawasaki Teryx that we are building up for the King of the Hammers UTV Competition, a long term demo of a Polaris RZR S, and a demo unit of the new 2009 Polaris Ranger HD.

2008 has been a great year for us. As we look forward to the next year, we’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope that everyone has a successful 2009.

Muzzy Digi-Tune available for the 2009 Kawasaki Teryx

2009 Kawaski Teryx Fuel Controller
Taking air/fuel tuning to the next level, the Muzzy Digi-Tune uses the latest technology to provide one of the easiest and most accurate methods of tuning your fuel injected quad.
Every Muzzy Digi-Tune comes pre-programmed and optimized for each model. There is no mapping or re-mapping necessary. Adjustments for elevation and/or modifications can be done "on-the-fly" using three buttons on the faceplate.

WHY IT'S BETTER: The Digi-Tune is a load based fuel adder which works with the factory ECU. The Digi-Tune's simple push button interface and powerful load based technology renders complex table-based throttle position and RPM re-mapping systems a thing of the past.
LOAD BASED TUNING: The Digi-Tune ushers in the latest in tuning science – gone is the old throttle position and RPM (Alpha-N) based tuning, replaced by a powerful and highly effective LOAD BASED tuning methodology. Load based tuning is superior to old school systems because different gears place different loads on the engine. RPM and throttle position based systems cannot tell the difference between first or fifth gear. The Digi-Tune knows the difference and adds the proper amount of fuel for every gear, every situation.

2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sport Review

2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 SportRide Review:

As the owner of a pretty tricked out 2008 Kawasaki Teryx, I am very familiar with the Teryx. My Teryx did not stay stock long, but I recently spent three days in a bone stock 2008 Teryx on a ride to the Grand Canyon.

The 2008 Teryx is a great machine, but my biggest complaint was that it came out with carbs instead of fuel injection. In less that a year since the first Teryxs hit dealer floors, Kawasaki dealers are already selling 2009 Teryxs with EFI. The New digital fuel inject on the Teryx is really nice. The engine starts right up and idles smoothly. On acceleration, the 2009 Teryx felt more crisp and seemed to get up to top speed a little quicker. While it is not a night and day difference, I definitely preferred everything about the EFI on the 2009 over the carburetors on the 2008.

Next up on the list of what's new is a fuel gauge. I know it doesn't seem like something to get that excited about, but I do some long distance rides, and the fuel level display takes the mystery out of "I wonder how much fuel I have left?"

The Teryx Sport has upgraded aluminum wheels which not only look much better, but are also 2.2 lbs. lighter than the standard steel wheels. Losing unsprung weight not only requires less energy to get the tires spinning, but also helps the suspension work better. And as a little bonus, the aluminum wheels are actually strong that their steel counterpart.

Suspension is on the 2009 Teryx Sport has a few upgrades as well. The gas-charged Kayaba shocks have reservoirs all the way around to help reduce fade in rough terrain. The preload adjustment is step-less, and they have fully adjustable rebound and compression (high and low speed) damping. Although we did not have any opportunities to jump the new Teryx Sport, we did get into some nasty whoops and hard g-outs.

I felt the Teryx Sport suspension handled the terrain better than a standard Teryx suspension. The ride through the light chop was a bit smoother than a standard Teryx and when we got into the whoops I felt a little more comfortable as well. Although I was able to bottom out the front shocks on a few hard g-outs, a standard shock would have gone to the stops more often and with more force. Overall, even though I did not spend any time trying to fine tune the adjustments on the new Sport shocks, I think they are a worthy improvement over standard shocks.

The Lime Green plastic on the Teryx Sport is a great color. Much more sharp than the drab green found on the 2008 Teryx. And with all the UTVs out in the dunes in Glamis, there is no doubt that you are in a Kawasaki when you are driving it.

The 2009 Kawasaki Teryx 750 FI 4x4 Sport has a MSRP of $11,899.

RANGER RZR Captures SCORE Championship for Fourth Series Championship this Year

RANGER RZR Captures SCORE Championship for Fourth Series Championship this Year
RANGER RZR wins championships with SCORE, BITD, GNCC and WORCS for 2008

Minneapolis, December 11, 2008 –Mark Lindsay and his RANGER RZR captured the SCORE “UTV Sportsman” championship leading the class with 204 points, 40 points ahead of the second-place finisher. The championship is the fourth for the RANGER RZR in 2008.

“Polaris is extremely happy with the success of the RANGER RZR during the 2008 racing season and we congratulate Lindsay on his championship,“ said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “The RANGER RZR continues to show its versatility and endurance in Side-by-Side racing and with the addition of the RANGER RZR S, we look forward to a successful 2009.”

Earlier this season, Lindsay made history in SCORE racing by being the first Side-by-Side to finish the Baja 500. His four-man team including himself and Phil Holdsworth as drivers, and Jason Spiess and Derek Tungmala as navigators, finished third in the Baja 1000 despite a couple accidents and challenges. The finish made Polaris Side-by-Sides the only vehicles to finish the Baja 250, 500 and 1,000; with a RANGER RZR finishing the 500 and 1000 this year, and Matt Parks’ 2007 history-making finish of the Baja 250 in a Polaris RANGER XP.

“The vehicle handled the silt, rocks, whoops and sand like a dream,” said Mark Lindsay. “Being the only Side-by-Side brand to finish the various SCORE races proves Polaris vehicles are more rugged than any other Side-by-Side.”

Lindsay’s team was sponsored by Afraidium Racing, FST, BS Sand Seats, Maier MFG, Maxxis, Iron City Polaris, King Shocks, ATVonics, TireBalls, DriFire Clothing, RE/MAX Lindsay Group, HMF Exhaust, Clif Bar, OMF and Vision X.

Lindsay’s SCORE championship is the fourth for the RANGER RZR in 2008. Jagged X and their No. 1919 RANGER RZR took their second Best in the Desert Points Championship in 2008 starting the season with two second-places and ending it with a dominating five consecutive firsts. Multi-time Pro and Pro Production GNCC Winner, William Yokley raced the Polaris RANGER RZR in GNCC’s ”UTV Open Modified” class and went undefeated taking the GNCC UTV Championship. And, Polaris/Lone Star/Eichner Racing’s Doug Eichner captured the top spot for the WORCS Side-by-Side title on his RANGER RZR with six podium finishes.

Jagged X’s RANGER RZR Finishes “Best in the Desert” Series Strong and Takes Championship for Second Year in a Row

Minneapolis, December 9, 2008 – Jagged X and their No. 1919, RANGER RZR finished the “Best in the Desert” series strong with another win at the “Henderson Fabtech Desert Classic” this past weekend. The win finished another dominating season that brought Jagged X and the RANGER RZR their second, consecutive BITD championship.

The Jagged X/Polaris Racing RANGER RZR team had already secured the season championship but was determined to finish the season as strong as possible. The field had a surprising number of entries with 10 teams lining up at the start for the approximately 150 mile race. The No. 1919 started in the sixth position driven by Blake Van De Loo and performed perfectly for the four-hour race. After swapping the lead several times, the RANGER RZR was able to pull ahead and take the first place finish by more than 10 minutes.

This race marks the fifth consecutive win for the Jagged X/Polaris Racing team which began the season with two second place finishes. This is the first time a Side-by-Side has completed every single race mile for an entire racing season in the BITD series. The Side-by-Sides also are the only class competing in a seven race season, with all other classes racing five races. The race also marks the 14th consecutive finish for the Jagged X RANGER RZR. These accomplishments proves the RANGER RZR is the hardest working, hardest racing Side-by-Side available.

“Polaris would like to congratulate Jagged X on their second Best in the Desert Championship,“ said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “The Jagged X team has been extremely dedicated to the RANGER RZR racing effort and their continued success and second championship is well deserved. We look forward to the 2009 race season with hopes Jagged X will continue its win streak and secure another championship.”

In the first-year of production for the RANGER RZR, Jagged X did the unthinkable and won the 2007 BITD championship. Jagged X got their first podium, taking second, at the 2007 “Blue Water Grand Prix” and took their first first-place at the 2007 “Vegas to Reno” race and never looked back. They finished the season with three first-place finishes and one second-place and the BITD championship.

In 2008, Jagged X and the No. 1919 started the season with two second-place finishes and then went on a tear finishing the season with five consecutive first-places, and the 2008 championship.

“The RANGER RZR is an amazing platform for our desert race program and we have to thank Polaris industries for their continued support,” said Bill Schueler of Jagged X. “We all work very hard together to finish and win races, and will stay on the cutting edge of Side-by-Side racing as our sport’s popularity continues to grow.”

Jim Baldwin Relinquishes Operations of Championship Off Road Racing

CORR CEO Steps DownJim Baldwin Relinquishes Operations of CORR

Jim Baldwin Relinquishes Operations of
Championship Off Road Racing

Newport Beach, CA (December 5, 2008)--Today, CORR owner Jim Baldwin has announced that he is stepping down as CEO of Championship Off Road Racing. While retaining ownership, Mr. Baldwin will relinquish control of the day to day operations and management of the off road racing series and elevate Cissy Baldwin to CEO. PMF Event Services Executive Producer, Jason Markham, will be also joining Cissy Baldwin on the management team.

In just under four years since purchasing CORR, Mr. Baldwin brought short course off road racing to national level. Despite difficulties brought on by the current economic recession, CORR has experienced triple digit growth in all aspects including spectator attendance, race participants, national awareness, and television viewers.

Mr. Baldwin made the following statement:

"Long before purchasing CORR in 2005, off road racing has been my passion and my pride. My family and I have had an amazing experience both in off road racing and being so deeply involved in the sport. Seeing the potential, I purchased CORR with the goal of developing a national presence. In the past few years, we have seen our efforts pay off as CORR and short course racing entered into the national motor sports spotlight. Recently I have experienced challenges but I have no doubt that CORR has the potential to succeed. Cissy Baldwin has clearly demonstrated her abilities and I have full faith and confidence that she will steer CORR to the next level. It is with a heavy heart, with the best interest in the future of CORR and short course racing, that I must now step aside from managing the operations of the series to empower the CORR management team to carry on this vision."

As Mr. Baldwin hands over the reins of the series he will devote his efforts to his real estate business and other business interests that have become his primary focus. While it remains the premier short course racing series in the nation, the CORR team is continuing to develop a revised plan for the 2009 season that will build upon the progress that has been developed under Mr. Baldwin's leadership.

Championship Off Road Racing™ brings high action, four wheel motorsports including two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive trucks to the closed course off road arena.

Yamaha Rhino 700 ECU
2008+ Yamaha Rhino 700 EFI
The Copperhead® ECU is a plug and play replacement for the stock ECU in the Rhino 700 EFI (not a piggyback solution). It controls the timing and fuel, and improves throttle response. It provides a typical 6% power increase from idle to redline (WOT), and a part throttle power increase of up to 25% over stock. In addition, the top speed limiter has been increased to allow for about 16KPH/10MPH higher top speed (results dependant on tire size). The ECU also allows for the speedometer to be recalibrated for different tire sizes, and fuel can be adjusted for aftermarket camshafts and pipes (requires optional USB interface).

Arctic Cat Prowlers Sweep Baja 1000

Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 wins the 2008 Baja 1000 Arctic Cat Prowler 700 XTX

Arctic Cat Prowler XTX Arctic Cat Prowler 1000 XTZ

Arctic Cat Prowlers Sweep Baja 1000

Minneapolis, Minn. – The finish line at the 41st Annual SCORE Baja 1000 was as dramatic as it was historic. Racing a pair of stock Arctic Cat Prowlers, the Bi-Polar/Arctic Cat team beat the brutal conditions to finish first and second place in the world’s longest, continuous off-road race. It was the first time in race history a side-by-side UTV vehicle has finished what is widely regarded as the most grueling off-road race in the world.

“We were the first-time finishers and first-time winners in this greatest of all races because of a total team effort,” said Bi-Polar team co-owner and driver Jim Creagan of Yacott, Wash. “From start-to-finish, every person fulfilled their role perfectly and each Prowler performed magnificently.”

Finishing first in the 634-mile race with a time of 27 hours and 57 minutes was a stock 2009 Prowler XTZ 1000 driven by Creagan and co-pilot Tim Wagner for the first 409 miles, followed by driver/co-driver Chris Fallon and Aaron Bahner for the remainder of the course.

Taking second place at 28 hours and 13 minutes was a 2009 Prowler XTX 700 EFI driven by three driver/co-driver combinations: Shane Morgan and Tabor Cresap, Scott Sorenson and Justin Serface, and Casey Squires and Mike Connors.

It was just the second attempt at the Baja 1000 for the Bi-Polar/Arctic Cat team. In 2007 they made it to mile-810 before succumbing to a broken suspension bolt. They returned this year, ready to prove the Prowler’s durability and to support their sponsors: Arctic Cat, Wired Energy Drink, Vision X Lighting, GBC Motorsports, TrailReady Beadlock Rims and King Shocks.

“These were stock Prowlers except for the required roll-cage, extra night lights, King shocks and tires,” said Creagan. “Nothing broke on either machine during the race and we had only one flat tire on the 700. Our support crew never even had to put a tool to either machine. It was just gas-and-go at the pit stops, which is a testament to their durability and performance. ”
